did something stupid while replacing window motor

Hi all,

I recently had my window motor go out, so I purchased a new one, and finally got around to installing it tonight. Well, it's been about 4 years since I last replaced one (I used to do a lot of repairs to my own cars).

Any how, I couldn't find anything in my book on it and I did most everything from memory until I got to the part of drilling the rivets. I didn't realize until it was too late that I drilled the wrong rivets. So, now I have my regulator and my window motor out (however, I only have screws for my new window motor).

So, I'm let with, do I go buy a new regulator just to get the screws (lol!) or does anyone know what size screws I need, or any suggestions?

I realized after I got the regulator out that I needed to drill through the door panel to remove the rivets from the window motor/regular, but now its too late.

Thanks in advance

hitch a ride over to a local hardware store and see if they might have some sheet metal screws the size you need

Ok, I spent the better part of the morning trying to get the wheels back on the track (perhaps I forgot to mention I tried to pull the whole assembly out and the wheels came off the tracks).

I now have everything lined back up and ready to go, however, I went through trying to use the same screws that came with the window motor (got some washers), and couldn't get the nut in.

So, went down to the automotive supply stores (first Advance Auto Parts), showed them what I had for a rivet before, and they handed me a rivet gun and a package of I think 3/16 rivets. I told them this looked to be too small, and they assured me it would work ($11 there).

I go home, and behold, its too small I think I need 1/2 rivets, so I go around to all of the automative supply stores (Autozone, Napa, Advance) and even hit others (Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes), and nobody had the rivets I need. I finally get told that the dealership will have the rivets I need.

I hope the dealership is open tomorrow. Does anyone know if they even carry a thing like rivets? Guy at the auto parts store said "If it's on your car, they'll carry it).

been a few years for me too. We used to use 1/4 or 9/32 rivets. They used a rivet gun called a "Big Daddy" riveter. You might try 1/4 -20 nuts and bolts they always worked when we ran out of rivets

Don't waste your money on the rivets. Nuts and bolts will do fine. That's usually what the dealer uses anyway.

They're right, nuts and bolts should work fine. If you want it riveted back in just because, leave you're door panel off and take it to a local gm dealership bodyshop or service department. They normally have parts trays stacked full of things like rivets, plastic rivets, clips, etc. They'll probably rivet it back in for you for a few bucks, or at least my bodyshop will. But, as stated above, it's fine to use nuts and bolts, just be sure they're tight.
