dial indicator

does anyone know how to use these to check valve lift? all the ones ive seen have pointer tips on them which confuses me about haow to get on a valve spring

what are you trying to do?

measure valve lift, lube lift, spring bind, ect.?

well, to measure valve lift with a dial indicator, you need a solid lifter and a checking spring


however, if you use the dial indicator on the lifter body, and then multiply by the rocker arm ratio, you get valve lift

so in other words i would have to pull the heads off. right now im just not sure whats in the motor. i did a valve adjustment a little while back and noticed some hand written numbers on the inside of the heads. dont know what they mean and dont want to waste money on heads or cam if i dont need them

you can get a good idea on lobe lift if you just pull the rockers and check the pushrod, but this might not be as accurate as the lifter body, if you do this, mount the indicator vertical above the pushrod(no angle if at all possible)

then multiply by your rocker arm ratio(1.5, 1.6, ect.)
