Deleted some stuff. (weight reduction) ... Got a couple Q's.

-I removed a bunch of crap from the trunk. The rear speaker wiring harness, and that mess that the pervious owner used to rig an amp to the stock sterio. I got rid of the sound dedeners in the bottom of the sail pannels, along w/ the styrofoam things. I also got rid of some of the carpet from the trunk area.
-I noticed a black box on the Pass side rear. It has a harness going into it. What is it? For the Sterio? If so can I delete the WHOLE harness? I think I'm just gonna run my own wiring for the sterio (except fused power).

-I also removed the sound dedener from the center hump. (Rubber and padding) I made a relief cut in the carpet under the radio console. The firewall cover, how far up does that go? How do I take the dash off to get it out? I heard it was pretty heavy.

-I think I got rid of about 5-10lbs of unneeded crap. I want this car to be light, but still be street friendly, and look stock. (not a dedicated drag car quite yet)

-Here's a pic. Sorry for the quality, camera phone.

I'm pretty sure that black box in the pass rear is the shock sensor for the alarm. Especially if it has a dial on it.

Na, this one is about 5 times the size of the shock sensor. It's near that, but down a little. it's about the size of an Amplifier. It has about a 25 wire connector on it.

I removed the rear seats + spare tire and jack for about 2 weeks or so and felt a moderate difference, but nothing huge. I have since put everything back (mostly because I am trying to make room in the garage.

The general rule of thumb is that for every 100 lbs you remove you gain 1/10 of a sec in the 1/4.

YEah, I took my spare and jack out a while ago. I was surprised at the difference that little bit made. .. I noticed a slight difference w/ what I removed earlier.

1/10 or 10lbs +1hp, or 100lbs is 10hp... Minus a zero.. meh.. I've stripped about 85lbs off this car in total. Prolly more w/ the fiberglass hood.. According to the list, I shaved 30lbs off the front end w/ the fiberglas hood.

I'm on a weight reduction thing. Hey, it's free. What is there to loose on the front end besides emissions stuff and bumper supports? Also w/o replacing the K member, which I will do eventually.

I already deleted the A/C, doing the !EGR soon. As soon as I get rid of my cats, I'll get rid of the AIR too. I need to loose more weight in the front. The back is light enough as it is.

Heres all I got rid of.

  • Hood (replaced with fiberglass)
  • front bumper (replaced with fiberglass sniper bumper and weighed 2 lbs less)
  • rear bumper (replaced with fiberglass sniper bumper and weighed 3 lbs less)
  • Bumper supports
  • replaced seats with light weight racing seats
  • rear seats
  • seat belts (replaced with 5 point harnesses and there still 4lbs lighter than stock)
  • Replaced carpet with new black carpet without padding or sound deadening
  • rubber padding under console
  • spair tire/ donught
  • jack
  • air system
  • egr system
  • ac compressor
  • ac condenser
  • ac evaporator
  • ac lines and tank
  • cat (replaced with true duals so i dunno if i lost or gained weight)
  • light buzzer
  • winsheild washer tank
  • wind sheild washer hoses, wiring, pump, nozzels
  • radiator overflow bottle. (replaced with a light weight aluminum one from jegs)
  • over half of the roof panel and the side bars (converted to t tops)
  • shifter (replaced with maginum grip pro stick) dunno if weight was lost or gained
  • stock amp
  • stock am fm casset radio ( sony head unit is 2 lbs lighter)
  • air bags
  • air bag "black box" and wiring
  • air bag sensors and wiring
  • body molding
  • stock antenna (replaced with one on the inside that weighed 12 oz.)

I did add side skirts so that added about 6 lbs. I also molded the kit in and the body molding was removed and the grove under them was shaved too. Molding the kit in took some bondo but I only used a grand total of 1 gallon and I sanded maybe half of that off so that may have added 3-5 lbs. If I had to guess I would guess I removed somewhere in the 300-375lb range. Not to shabby for useless stuff.

Next on the list is to install the bmr k member i have and a aluimum 1le drive shaft.

Anyone know what that black box in the pass rear is? Air Bag stuff? It's in the Pass rear, near the antenna and the alarm sensor. It's about the size of an amplifier. Has stock wiring harness going into it.

Anyone have Airbag Delete info? Aftermarket Steering wheel info? Adaptation?

If you have the monsoon system it is probably the amp for that.

I don't know if I did or not. I bought the car used w/ 17,500 miles on it. The previous owner butchered the wiring trying to rig up an amp in the rear...
I mean he did a really ****-poor job of it. Used house wires for everything, huge coax cable for the power wire. I'll get a pic of it when I get home.

Lightweight Deka batties can shave 16 lbs. Use a smaller coolant reservoir (some ppl have converted naglene water bottles for this purpose. Empty your washer fluid reservoir.

.... I'm going to be polite about this... no..
I just got these wheels 6 months ago. I love them. I have my stockers for the track. Another set of wheels (draglites) would be too expensive right now.

I am not going to loose the bumper supports because this is a daily driver. I just want to loose some stuff that I don't need. tho, I'd like to retain some creature comforts.. I'd like it to look a little stock, and I don't want to scare the ladies away w/ a stripped interior either.

Anyway... Does anyone know how to remove the firewall insulation in back of the dash? Does anyone have tips for removing the dash?

Eventually I'll find some time to take the seats out and strip the carpet to get at the insulation under it.

well I would say if you are looking at theses small things for weight...Its a waste.

Its not going to make the car any faster if you loose some insulation and a amp...it all adds up but not too much. If its your DD I would just drive it and enjoy. I made the mistakes a long time ago to remove things and then I never wanted to drive the car...and after removing all this stuff, heater a/c/ p/s power brakes etc. car only picked up a tenth
