Cutout vs. No muffler

Right now I have a cutout in the I pipe that dumps right under the back seat. It did have a electric plate on it, but it broke(that's a whole nother story ). I am running the cutout open, and it is nice and loud. It does tend to drone in the interior and it vibrates the console into some afwul sounding rattles and buzzes.

I want to hear from you guys who don't have a muffler and ran the exhaust out the back somehow. Do you have a dual or single tip? It shoud sound about the same as my cutout, right? And how bad does it drone while you are cruising down the interstate? And does it still vibrate your interior into junky rattles? I think my best solution with the Magnaflow catback would be to hack the muffler, and weld on a piece of pipe to run it out away from the gas tank and maybe have it do like the v6 exhaust and have the tip just turn down a little and not be all flashy with the dual tips. Hopefully I am making some sense here.

I think you should just get your cut-out fixed or get a new one. because you will get in that drone mood without a muffler. And with a cut-out you can have it closed when you don't want to hear it. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Cutout vs. No muffler

Having heard the same car with no muffler and later with a different exhaust but e-cutout ... I can say that the no-muffler sounded a little better in my opinion.

However, the E-Cutout lets you close it on trips and run through the muffler.

I chose the e-cutout for that reason. 2000 RPM drones, and I wouldn't have liked driving to Bowling Green last week with the cutout open the whole way. It was nice to close it up during the drive and then open it back up when I got to Kentucky.

How much did getting your cut-outs cost you guys?

Is it a switch inside that you can just flip, and it'll go throught the cutout?

Also, would it be worth getting one with the stock exhaust?

Thanks.

Re: Cutout vs. No muffler

VERY worth it on a stock exhaust!! the muffler is crazy restrictive.

and a cutout is technically just a Y in the exhaust that allows you to remove the cap and bypass the muffler. the E-cutout is a plate that you put on the cutout which has a motor to open and close a "butterfly" valve. it kindda looks like a throttlebody off an LS1.

the switch is routed up into the cockpit and allows open/close with the flip of a switch

FOR THE ORIGINAL QUESTIONS:
i have had a cutout in under the rear seat and i know what you mean about the drone and rattles.

right now i have LTs, orp and the exhaust dumping where the muffler should be. it cuts down the drone inside a bit over the cutout. but realize when i had a cutout, i didn't have headers and orp...so it was not as loud.

the reason the cutout drones and rattles is because of the sound reverberation. basically sound echoing off the ground and the underbody of the car. with the muffler removed that is decreased since there is more room under the trunk and the sound can escape better. also it is farther away from the driver which helps cut down some sound/drone.

on a recent 5hr road trip, with the muffler gone and a ghetto-engineered turndown (havn't gotten chance to do a good one) i quickly got tired of the drone in the car. granted i was doing 80 on the highway most of the time. but it was annoying after several hours. not as bad as when i had my cutout..but still annoying.

i would honestly stick with the cutout on your magnaflow (the EXACT setup i had ) so that you can close the c/o when you want to.

Re: Cutout vs. No muffler

who dug this thread out from the grave?

I am going to get a used borla catback for under $400. I'll put my electric cutout where their plate goes. The DMH people said it would fit there. Now if they would only return my broken cutout. It was shipped to them two weeks ago Thursday. They better get it to me soon before I start spreading ill will on this and many other boards.

So there is my setup, let this damn thread go rot back in peace.
