Collapsed Ring? How bad is it?
Cracked Ring? How bad is it?
I am looking at buying a 93 Trans Am ... There is something wrong with it however - here is what the owner says:
i changed the supercharger pulley to 2.75" and the car made 10lbs of boost.but after 4 pulls on the dyno and carefull programming the car seems to have collapsed a ring because im getting some back pressure from the valve cover breathers...what this means is worst out come, you will have to change the rings....this shoul cost just a couple hundred dollars in parts.
Is this worth getting? How much should I expect for labor on this? Is it adviseable to drive? I would need to drive it about 300 miles if I get it. Any help and insight greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I had a nissan 240sx that had backpressue building up in the valve cover. At first I thought it was worn (or damaged) rings, but it wasn't smoking or consuming oil like you would expect on a car with damaged rings. It turned out to be a burnt valve. Not saying it is in your case, but there might be other problems. (bad ring, valve, fuel washed cylinder) I didn't bother fixing it...I drove with it like that for 6 months then sold the car.
