Code scanner

Hi, ok, I'm new here and I know the topic has been discussed to death but has anyone come up with a scan tool that will read codes on a 95 LT1??? The SES in on and I think it's related to the air pump. No it hasn't be eliminated and I'm not inclined to do it just yet. In fact I think I found the last of the 88880033 type air pumps in existence and would have it in a few days. I have 2 good scanners that don't even recognize this car. It's frustrating. I don't have the time or desire to get deep in it with tuning or using a cable and laptop. Any thoughts from the experts??? Thanks, much appreciated.

Re: Code scanner

From what I've heard you need to find an ODB1 scanner that takes an ODB2 connector. I've seen the cable on Amazon that will turn the ODB1 connector into an ODB2. I don't have a perfect answer as to which works the best though, I'm still trying to figure that out myself. The couple that I found that should work ok, appear to be $150-$200 and I haven't bitten the bullet yet.

Re: Code scanner

Thx for the response. I like to call it OBD1.5. I read somewhere here that an actron cp9185 works. They are on ebay for $70. I may try it. If I do, I'll post. This thing is a beautiful fun car that is a basket case. I want the cooling fans to turn off so I can get heat!!!

Re: Code scanner

With a 95 Z28 you have OBD1. In 96 they went to the OBD2.

Maybe you will want to try the Free SCAN 93/94/95 software created by Gary Doug. It would give you specifics that could be analyzed, and possibly lead you to the correct solution.

Click on the link below !

https://www.camaroz28.com/forums/com...95-lt1-874306/

READ the information before you download it so you will know which download to select, and how it works.

You will need a cable and a laptop to use it. One of the places you can get a cable from is OBD Diagnostics

You can also make your own cable, the instructions are in the Scan link created by Gary Doug.

Injuneer the Super Moderator is able to read and diagnose the file if needed.

Another option is to Purchase a OBD1/OBD2 Actron CP9185 Elite Diagnostic Scanner. Currently Amazon has them at $74.

You will also need a 12 pin OBD1 to 16 pin OBD2 Converter Adapter Cable that are around $10 at Amazon also.

OR do a Scanner Connection courtesy of http://shbox.com/1/xraycable.jpg

Re: Code scanner

Thank you. I just ordered the cp9185. Im pretty sure my craftsman scanner has the cable adaptor. If not ill grab that too. Maybr ill try the downloaded program route if i dont get what im looking for. Thx again. As my name implies, i know my jeep better than this z28.

Re: Code scanner

The CP9185 should include the correct cable.

To determine if the SES light is related to the AIR pump, check the fuse for the AIR pump circuit. If it is blown, unhook the AIR pump harness connector, then replace the fuse = no code set. The code diagnostic only checks the integrity of the circuit from the fuse to the AIR pump relay. As long as that is OK, you don't even need the AIR pump. PCM has no way to know if the pump is there or not. OBD-2 corrected that by monitoring the O2 sensors while cycling the pump on and off.

OBD-1.5 was only used with the Corvette LT1. Appears they put the 16-pin connector in the F-Body, but never bothered to change the PCM from OBD-1. The 94 and 95 PCM's are identical, with the same part #. With the Corvette OBD-1.5 (not an official GM name) some codes remain the 2-digit OBD-1 format. Others, related to OBD-2, like the single after-cat O2 sensor, use the Pxxxx alpha-numeric OBD-2 format.

Re: Code scanner

Injuneer, I just received my CP9185. It came with a 16 pin connector cable, an extension cable and CD. should this setup be enough to read the codes on my 95 or do I need more? Thank you for your time.

Re: Code scanner

I believe member GaryDoug (author of Scan9495) has verified that it will work.

That's all you need. The scanner gets power from the car connector, so if it doesn't light up, check the cigar lighter fuse.

The review has an error about needing a separate power supply for use on a 95. That is not the case.

Re: Code scanner

Injuneer, 25A fuse was blown (should have been a 20A). Replaced it with a new properly sized 20A as well as the relay. My cousin (original owner) is borrowing the car now, so I don't know if the light is truly off, but time will tell.

I want to thank you and GaryDoug for your expert assistance.

Do you mean the AIR pump fuse?

Re: Code scanner

Yes sir, just as you pointed out. Seems like someone at some point put in a 25A where a 20A should be, and was still shorting it out.

Re: Code scanner

There was a GM recall on 95 and newer LT1's, for the AIR pump system. Pumps were corroding, seizing up and drawing too much current. They added an isolation valve and might have changed the electrical circuit. Shoebox has info on the mechanical changes, not sure if it covers the electrical. Other than looking at the part on your car, not sure how to tell if the recall work was done.

Re: Code scanner

The recall work was done on the car. The air pump it now has is the GM88880033. It has the external check valve and 2 wire connectors. the internal check valve allowed moisture in, seizing the electric motor and causing the short. I found an new 88880033 on ebay and bought it a week ago. I'll post pics later for anyone interested.
