clunking under passenger rear

I keep hearing a clunking noise under the passengerside rear quarter panel. I jacked the car up last week and really could not find anything. I thought maybe the shock was loose.
Anybody have this or know a fix?

While you lay BESIDE the car, have a couple people bounce the back end of the car. That should tell you if it is the shock or something else in the suspension.

Its unlikely but maybe the brake caliper has come loose.

check your LCA bolts...they could be loose

and check the trans mount while you're under there

I got the same thing.. once I get off my lazy ****, I'm going to replace my transmount (which I KNOW is loose, i can feel/hear it thru the shifter) and check up on my exhaust (which I fairly certain is banging sometimes)

Went to check tonight, and the darn hydrolic jack went out, it won't even pic up the car. I am going to get a new one this weekend.

I had the exact same problem. My uncle looked at it (GM ASE Master Tech) and he said that he couldn't find anything. Just for spite I relaced the LCA's, with aftermarket Hotchkis arms. When I went to take them off, the front bolt on the LCA was loose. I bolted the new ones in and it went away. I'm pretty sure that's causing your clunking.

Re: clunking under passenger rear

just as an update, my problem definantly was the trans mount.... I finally got around taking it out.. and yes.. it was _completely_ dead!

I had an orignal 1LE mount that I bought back in 1999, but never got it installed till now.. The 1LE mount looks simpler, and even the nut is a different size.... I believe GM doesn't make this part anymore... (along with alot of other 1LE specific parts)

Anyways, changing the broken mount cleared up alot of the clanking I was hearing before.. Its fixed and works wonderfully... although kinda distirbs me how bad my original was..

where did you get it? Just in case that is my problem. I have ordered some low profile rhino ramps since my jack went to crap. They will be here this week.

A broken tranny mount causes a loud clunking in your floor boards upon acceleration. If your thumping is truely coming from your rear quarter panels, then I add another vote for a loose LCA nut. By the way, what is the bump stop mod in your signature?

Re: clunking under passenger rear

The Trans mount? From SLP.. back in 1999-2000 though.. I hear alot of the 1LE stuff has simply been replaced by regular stock stuff.

I used rhino ramps too this time around.... Btw, if you plan on doing the trans mount, you do need a jack to suppor the tranny when you unbolt the support...

strange thing is, I could have sworn my clunking was coming more towards the rear though... guess i heard wrong.. I can't complain..

Here it is. I found it on installuniversity.com, but they used autotap to do it. The link above shows you how to do it with a voltmeter. Took me all of about 20 minutes.
