Check out my 1/4 times...Good enough?

Today I took the car to the track to get some baseline runs before I started adding parts. Its a 97 SS with 75,000 miles, 6 speed and has Edelbrock shorty headers and Borla cat back. I did a best of 13.85 @ 101.56 on street tires. That was with a 2.1 60' and a 8.9 1/8 mile @ 80 mph. Just wanted to see what U guys though of the times as see if this is about average. I dont figure the shorties are helping to much.

no there not, but you car should be trapping higher with your mods. I would do a complete tune up. if that doesnt fix it start with a tune next.

What type traps should be expected? The mods are minor so I wasnt expecting much.

I agree with the others, there is alot of power that can be lost from a lack of a good tuneup. In order to get a true baseline run, you want the engine to be running in tiptop shape before you start adding further modifications.

What were the weather conditions, and what's the altitude of the track? What is the race weight of the car?

These are important questions one must consider, before claiming to know if your #s are on par with the mods you have.

Well the car is factory weight with a 145 pound driver, it was 50 degrees outside and as far as a tune up I did plugs and wires before going but the I feel the car need a new optispark cause Im having some hard starting issues. Im not sure of the altitude of the track, I was at Rockingham.

One source lists Rockingham at 350-ft above sea level, so altitude is not a factor. Weather sounds good, although you also need to record barometer and humidity, or get "density altitude", which rolls it all up into a single number. Then get the weight of your car. Most tracks have a scale on the return road. Note fuel level, since 10 gallons of gas can add 70# to the car weight.

Without collecting all the data, and using it to evaluate the numbers, its very hard to state conclusively how good the numbers are. You also want to log that data for each run, and use the online calculators to "correct" the run to standard conditions, so you can keep track of whether you are improving the performance of the car.

To me, those numbers look decent, for nothing more than shorty headers and a catback. Are the headers dual-cat or single-cat design?

Ok, I havent responded to this post in awhile, I forgot to subscribe duh. Anyways, the car had alittle over a 1/4 tank of gas and reading on what our shift points should be I was shifting alittle low, somewhere around 5400 rpms. The exhaust still has the factory dual cats. My fuel pump is also on its way out, Im having to prime the pump to get the car to start on the first crank. Im guessing that doesnt help.

Use a fuel pressure gauge and check that out. It could be simple like a fuel filter or nothing to do with fuel at all. It $20 and easy to do and you might already have one.

$20 for a fuel filter, you're crazy, lol... I have never paid more than $8 for a fuel filter for my Camaro.

Track times, in reasonable air, are right where they should be. My '94 was running 13.5 at 101 with the same mods. It is the mph that lets you know everything is ok... 100-102, with shorty headers is right on. The cat back just makes it sound better until you add more power. The gain is in the headers.

Look at the time in my sig. from a couple of years ago at 'Slickingham'. I think your times are reasonable considering the mods are similar (and also on the same track). The weather was also similar; about 50 degrees or so at night in the fall. My car would spin like hell on that track out of the hole even with the Nitto DR's; and I'd typically end up over 14 seconds.
