Charging Battery while connected to the car?
I did this a while back. the car had the fuel pump go and it sat for a while awaiting the new pump. charged up the battery while it was fully connected to car. grounded the charger to the alt bracket. Car turns over but does not catch. gets spark and is getting fuel (spark tester and fuel guage checked). Pump works as determined by electrical, auditory, and guage checks.
New battery was purchased and installed but did not help. good oil pressure. tank is 1/3 full of gas not sure what putting more in would do.
Any ideas? Exhaust smells bad when I try to start it not sure if that means anything?

you shouldn't have fried anything. I have charged several batteries while hooked to the car without problems. If it sat for a long enough time you might just have a buildup of crappy gas in your injectors or what not. Which could be the cause of the bad smell.. I know varnish smells pretty bad when trying to fire a car over that has had the gas in it for several months.

It couldn't hurt to try some adding some new good gas with a little of that injector additive for the fuel... as gas can go bad if left to sit for to long
you absolutley the sure the fuel pump is working exactly as it was before.. did you repalce it with a stock {GM -delco or whatever}?

well if the pumps OK then I'd think the gas has gone bad.. can't hurt to drain out the old stuff then put in some new and see if anything gives.. only other thing is maybee cleaning out the injectors
Gas should be good
the gas will be good in the tank. could still have a buildup of previous gas in the lines or whatever. putting some fuel cleaner in your gas might not hurt. also I would put another 4 gallons in the car. bring it to at least 1/2 tank. if everything is working like it should you may have to turn it over a bit in order for the new gas to get to the injectors..
The fuel system is a "recriculated" type. As soon as the pump starts, the fuel in the lines flows into the tank and is mixed with whatever is there. If he put fresh fuel in the tank, he has fresh fuel in the lines.
intially I thought there could be a possibility of a cheap aftermarket generic not pumping the right amount of fuel through for the engine, but since it is a OEM I seriously doubt it...and from what he says about a new battery etc., kind of elimantes the electrical (geuss could check voltage @ injector if wanted to be 100% sure)... what else do you think it could be??? is there maybee a possibility that the fuel lines are actaully cloged (geuss easy way to check that is pull of the quick connectors up front and see if fuel is there)

Is it sort of starting ok, but dying instantly? Or are you not getting any fire at all, just cranking over? If the battery was completely dead, then you may need to give it a little throttle (just enough to crack the tb open, no need to floor it) when you turn it over and then keep giving a little throttle to help it stay alive for a few minutes until the cpu figures out what's going on.
