Question changing oil

do you really have to change your engine oil every 3,000 miles or is that just a reccomended time to change it? Ive heard many different things and i was thinking that as long as you have enough oil in there then you can go longer between changes. Should you get it changed every 3,000 miles or can you go longer without hurting anything?

i suppose when you're using full synthetic you can go longer, 5k miles b4 changing it. I just do the regular changes, like every 3-4 months with mobil 1 syn. considering i only put 6k miles on it in the last 2 years.

I try to change the oil every 1,000 miles in all of my cars. In the Z it's probably even less than that. I only put maybe 1k - 1.5k miles on it a year. I think I've changed the oil 3 times since I've owned it. Mobil One all the way.

You can go longer and not hurt anything, but Id avoid it all costs... keeping your oil fresh keeps your motor fresh.

My truck has 180k on its 350... It has had religous 2k oil changes (non-synthetic). we just pulled the intake manifold to change the gasket, and the inside of it was clean as a whistle... most engines with that kind of mileage are sludged up to the point where you cant even see the pushrods... sludge = bad

I personally do 3k or less on my mobil 1.

it really depends on what oil you use. my nissan v6 has 286k on it and i go 5k between oil changes. when i took off the head to change the gasket the cams and valves had no wear on them at all. my datsun l4 had 388k on it and i changed the oil every 3k. my TA has 149k and i chnage it every 4k miles. but i put good oil in it

Look at it this way. It wont hurt if you change it often. It will keep your engine clean and fresh. Its cheap, and easy to do. I try to do it every 1k miles. Its a 1 hour job, and it keeps me busy

I change my oil every 3 months to the day. I only put about 5-6k miles a year. If you have old dirty oil and the car sits then that is bad. I have read that you can wait 10k miles if you use 100% synthetic. i would not go that long no matter what. i use Valvoline syntec blend

I change my oil in my Camaro once a year with Mobil 1 syn.

Keep in mind I only drive it for 3 months in the summer and it only gets 2000 km or less.........

First thing I do after starting it up and getting warm in the spring is change the oil.

I just switched to Mobil 1, well it was my first oil change on this car since I bought it. Either way, I"m going to let it go for 4,000 miles before I change it again. I believe that with the synthetic it'll be fine. I also don't have to worry about the oil getting contamined because I drive the wheels off this car and I'll probable be changing it between 2.5-3 months.

Used mobil 1, changed every ~4k miles. After 140k miles, inside of motor was looking brand new. No gunk, no sludge, no varnish. It was surprising.

Unless you have time & money to burn or you tow a trailer or make a lot of cold starts and cold stops, every 3000 miles is a little excessive & wasteful. If in doubt, have an oil analysis done. My daily driver is mostly highway running and I always take it up to 7500 miles.
