CAT Converter Recommendation?? RandomTech or Magnaflow

OK, so the rest of my exhaust is getting an overhaul and as part of that it is time to change out the catalytic converter. I'm going to have to get one welded in. While I wait on a plate from hooker to weld to the cat I need to decide which converter to buy.

I've seen the Random Tech cats but they seem rather pricey. What about the magnaflow cats? They are about $200 less than the Random Tech. Anyone out there have an opinion? Is the Random Tech worth the extra $$$?

FYI, my car has a single cat after the Y and I'm going with 3".

Thanks in advance.

Joe

I would go with the Magnaflow, they are a heck of a lot cheaper then the RandomTech stuff. Also, maybe you should look into the Carsound cats., they get alot of good feedback and I believe they are affiliated with Magnaflow. Plus you can get them for under a hundred bucks.

I have a Magnaflow/Carsound cat on my car right now. I have to say that I have not felt any loss in performance. The only complaint I have of the cat over my offroad pipe is that it is quite a bit quieter. Other than that, I do enjoy being able to drive around without having to worry about the smog police catching me or having obnoxious fumes coming from my car. I got mine off eBay for pretty cheap.

Yeah, Carsound is made by Magnaflow. I have one that I purchased from Ebay for around $60 shipped. If you search for them on there, you'll find this guy that sells them all the time that I got mine from. I have no complaints as of yet, and it's been on for about 30k miles.

I have hooker super comp shorties and 3" SLP cat back. I was running a straight pipe and when it came time for emmisions I had a 3" Magnaflow welded in. Seems to work great, and has not afected the performance at all. I would go with the magnaflow just cause its cheaper. It is easily as good and most likely better than the random tech piece.

I have two Magnaflows on my car, which I added after I installed a Magnaflow catback. Didn't see much in terms of a performance gain, but the exhaust note got a lot deeper. Definitely worth it for that, in my book. And my car passed emissions flawlessly with those on there.

Spend the extra $200 somewhere else... I got my Magnaflow/Carsound cat off ebay also, but for $52 shipped.. Part #94109 which is a 3" cat... If you go to installuniversity.com and look in "Tech Articles" you'll see a test with the Magnaflow/Carsound cat which tells you how well it flows.

OK, so what's the major differences between the Magnaflow 94009 (12") and the 94109(9")? Flow numbers way off? Not to hijack the thread, but would they both fit on my '94 Formula? Thanks.

There should be little difference between the flow rates of the 9 and 12 inch converters. Its more so a question of which will fit best in your application.

Carsound cat here of Ebay also. Just don't throw away your OEM cat. You may need it later if you don't pass emissions. I am failing my smog but I have a cam and midlengths. They say it is most likely my cat that is failing me.

I have the Magnaflow on another car and couldn't be happier with it.
