Cat-back vs. Muffler
Hey guys. I have been on the prowl for a nice new exhaust solution for a long time now. Here's the deal: I have a stock exhaust and one of my tips just fell off.
I want to upgrade so I can turn heads when I drive through a parking lot (for sound quality, not obnoxious loudness) but I am on a tight budget.
My question is:
Why spend the money for a full cat-back when you can just change the muffler? Does that extra half inch help all that much for performance and sound quality?
I am hearing enough goods things about the Magnaflow that if everyone tells me to go for the cat-back, I will. It's affordable enough. But if it is not necessary, I will just swap out the muffler and get a new set of tips to save money.
Remember, a nice deep sound is the main objective right now...though I do plan on modding in the future... Thanks a lot guys...

I've heard magnaflows that sounded really nice...
I went with the muffler route... got a flowmaster 80 series from summit, and had the outlet pipes fabbed up, and put my stock tips on...
cost me 150 al together. sounds GREAT... I wouldn't trade it.
if you're going for just the muffler make sure you measure the diameter of the pipe that goes to the muffler inlet before you order.

steveo i agree with you to a certain extent, if all your planning on doing to the car is getting it to sound nice then yeah go with just a muffler, but if down the road you plan on cam/head/intake/forced induction then go with the catback... in the long run you will make more power, if i'm not mistaken 2 1/2" pipe can support roughly 300 at the wheels with a 3" being able to support over 350, so when you start putting more power then the difference will be noticable, but just for the sound then why spend the extra buck if your not going to mod the car.

I definately agree though that if you plan on some major modification like heads/cam or forced inducitoin than atleast a 3 inch I pipe or cut out should be used to see the maximum gains
