Car starts up but is in drive

My 93 Camaro Z28 starts but when I start it, it takes off as it's already in drive. What causes this problem? I know it's a transmission problem but don't know exactly to look for. Please reply to this thread with any knowledge on this issue. Thank you.

There's a neutral safety switch on the shifter, that is supposed to prevent starting unless the shifter is in "PARK" or "NEUTRAL". Sounds like there may be a problem with the switch or the wiring, if it allows the engine to start when the selector is clearly in "D".

Shoebox has a copy of the wiring diagram on his website - in this diagram it's labeled "transmission position switch" in the lower left corner:

If the shifter is actually in Park, maybe the linkage at the transmission is badly worn or damaged.

There's no tension in the shifter that's inside of the car. I actually bought the transmission rebuilt from Hawks Third Generation. I'm able to move the shifter inside of the car freely and when the shifter inside of the car is set to park I'm still able to spin my tires freely when I turn the driveshaft.

Does the shift lever change gears at all? Appears you are stating the trans is always in "drive", no matter where the handle is. For example, will it go into reverse?

Have you checked the cable that connects the shifter handle to the transmission? The cable connects to a lever on the driver side of the trans, just above the pan.
