calipers with no pads

besides it not being all that safe and the car pulling to one side during braking, is it ok to take the pads out of the caliper and drive like that? will the piston hit the rotor. My pistion in hanging up and squealing real loud. wont be driving much with it like this just wondering if there would be any other problems? thanks.

I would imagine there would be excess heat build up on the the working pads. Bad idea. The fact that you know it is not safe means you shouldn't drive it like that on the road.

Why on earth would you even consider that. It is an EXTREMELY BAD IDEA. Not only would you lose at least 30% of your braking power, but you would ruin your rotor and possibly your caliper. Are you sure it is the piston hanging and not the bolts that the caliper slides on hanging up? That is easy to fix with some brake cleaner and caliper grease.

i was just wondering if it was do able i probaby wanst gunna do it Yea its the piston i can see how part of it is haning up and its coming out crooked it and rubbing the pad on one spot. I put new pads in and it rubbed the other part of it and the rest never touched the rotor. and its really really relaly loud thats why i even thought about it.

I have the same problem on my left rear pad, only the top half of the pad is making contact with the rotor.A friend of mine said to check the bolts the caliper slids on 1st,since it worked ok till I put on the new pads. How exactly is it done ? Do those bolts just pull right out ?

if you drive with no pads, you will pop the piston right out and loose 50% braking power as you will loose fluid to 2 wheels.

That sounds like an interesting mod. Just think, the sqealing would be gone, less weight and as an added benefit the front end would get a free customizing job when you slam into a car in front of you.

Thats a REally bad idea. Why not just fix it?

Thanks for the post next time keep it to yourself I was asking what would happen not for smart *** comments. U dont even have any useful info. Fixing it involves not having a car which is my only car and paying money, thats why I asked the question it is fixed now. Thanks for the HELPFUL info for those that responded.

I'm sorry but someone who doesn't know if their car needs brake pads doesn't have much business around a car. Don't try driving without the pads, unless you want to replace everything down there. Not to mention I'm sure it would squeal and grind like hell anyway.

i never said i dont think you need pads. i was wondering what would happen if i drove the car without pads. i know plenty about cars and really dont need smart *** comments. it seems like theres always a couple people that like to make smart *** comments to someone trying to get some info about something. why cant you just give the info without all the extra bull**** that is not needed? its ashame everything has to be so negative all the time. 95lt16speed gave me exactly what i wanted without his opinion on me and i appreciate that. for you other guys i hope people bust on you everytime you ask a car question.

How was I being a smartass?

I merely suggested you might want to get a little more experience before tackling things on your car. A friend or a Hayne's manual can go a long way.

If I wanted to be a jerk I would have been much more blunt about it.

I do not see a lot of negative answers here dude, yes some smart a$$ attitude but you must look at it from our stand point. Very few people would even consider doing what you asked about.

I think you need to pay attentions to the word SAFE ,,, driving without pads will at the very least turn a relativley cheap repair into a more expensive repair even if you do not take out someone.

Get into a serious personal injury accident and you will get your a$$ sued.

Go ahead and flame me (puts flame retardant suit on)

If you press the brake pedal without the pads on, the piston will likely blow out and you will lose your braking.
