A/C Troubleshooting Question
Okay, I had a few minutes to mess with this yesterday. Checking that plug and switch on the compressor is insane! Does anyone have any tips on how to do this without having my arm ripped off????
Anyway, I was checking connections etc..., and I found that if I push down or pull up ever so slightly on the clutch, I can hear air (or refridgerant) escaping from the compressor. I did notice last year when I had to recharge the system that the front of the tensioner pulley was covered in oil, but I was unsure of where it was coming from because the compressor didn't have anything on it. But, I looked at the relationship between the clutch/pulley, and tensioner locations, and it seems possible that the compressor puked out fluid right behind the clutch onto the tensioner pulley. Which leads me to believe that the system is low or empty, but, since the compressor won't kick on, my pressure guage on the low pressure side is showing that everything is okay.
My big question is, should the compressor make ANY leaking sounds at all??? I found it odd that if I pushed down or pulled up on the compressor that it sounded like pressure was escaping the system. Keep in mind that I wasn't cranking on the compressor, it was very light pressure.
Also, before I start chasing problems that may not be there, is there a trick to getting in there to check the connector as well as jumping the switch on the compressor?
On a side note, I did throw a code that said the A/C Pressure switch is degraded. I replaced that, and now I get the A/C clutch request, but nothing happens. The clutch won't kick in, but I'm not throwing codes either. I did try to jump the relay (pins 85 and 87), but that still doesn't work.
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated, as we are leaving for a small road trip, and we'd like to take the Camaro. The downside is that the wife is NOT a happy person if the A/C doesn't work.
Oh yes, I forgot. Last year when running the A/C on the highway, when the clutch would kick in, I could physically "feel" it drag down the car. It was like you could feel the car slow ever so slightly from the comprosser cycling. This isn't normal is it? I don't ever remember it doing this before the compressor was replaced.

should not be anything coming from the compressor, i replaced my whole system 2 years ago but since then had to replace the hoses twice. I still have a small leak at the block on top and one time the hose that goes under the car was getting caught on a part of the frame ( I Think) a V shaped piece of metal and made a hole in it after a while, and another time was the same line was too close to the compressor and the compressor turning caused a hole
I didn't think that anything should be coming from the compressor. It stinks because the compressor is two years old and the warranty was only for a year. Go figure.I would still like to trouble shoot it, but at this point, I seriously think that the compressor is shot. I also need to replace the seals around the expansion block (valve), as mine are leaking too.
