a/c compressor removal

My compressor locked up and I have a new one already but I want to know if there is a good way to remove it without taking it to a shop to get the system emptied. It will cost me like $60 to have it done and I don't want to spend the money if I don't have to.

im pretty sure there is no way, to R&R a compressor without evacuating the system. you could release the freon yourself by takin the scrader valve out but thats highly illegal and supposedly hurts the ozone. anyways youd still have refill it. o and if your last compressor locked up id flush all the lines and cooler, you can do that in vehicle. if theres anything in those lines from when your old compressor craped out you can bet it will take that new compressor out too.

You have to evacuate the system and pull vacuum on it to ensure there is no water in it. If the compressor locked up, you need to find out why, or the new compressor will lock up too.
