Broken windshield and wiper arm

Sad story. Was cleaning the car, and i had the left wiper arm up to clean the windshield. Was going around the car and opened the hood. Normally the wiper slaps down, but this time it snapped the arm in half, and in doing so, cracked my windshield out. That was a fun mistake. The crack isnt bad, localized at the inspection sticker down low.

Anyway, I ordered a new wiper arm, but I can't get the old 'stub' off of the bolt. Any suggestions?

Dude!! I owed myself a new windshield for the exact same reason a couple years ago!! Oops!!!

As far as getting the old wiper arm stub off, I think there's a small metal tab that you have to either push or pull to release the arm off the drive. I could be wrong though!? Been a long time since I've pulled a wiper arm.

They make a puller you can get or i use a rubber mallet and pound on the middle of it. I replace windshields and unless the cheat you should remove the wipers. Give them the new part and have them do it so they pull the cowl like they should. Be careful if you use the mallet if the winshield is not broken.

just take off the bolt and pry up on it very gently with a screwdriver, pry bar, etc. it will pop off fine. i would say be careful to not pry against the windshield and break it, but you already took care of that

Same thing happened to me a while back... I was sooo mad at myself but the good news is if you have full coverage your insurance has to fix it for free! I just told my insurance my windshield was broken and they came out the next day and fixed it for free

We usually wave anywhere from $50-$100 of the deductible depending upon the cost and what the insurance company pays. If you asked the shop to do it before you scheduled they would have no problem. I only pay $75 for the glass and with the labor and urethane it comes to $185 + tax. The insurance company usually pays $400-$500 for a typical job so there is some room to negotiate. Be sure not to use the Safelite stuff and go with a good brand like PPG or LOF glass if factory is not available.

I got a quote of 270 for the best place in town. I had a windshield done on my old car, and it got screwed up, so I want it done right. I am going to call my insurance this afternoon and see what they say. Go from there.

HAH. About 2 weeks ago I was trying to pull my wiper arms off via hammer. Like how you pry a nail out of wood. Didn't take much pressure before i hear a "crack". I didn't even want to open my eyes and look because I was so pissed. Anyways. $100 deductible later got it fixed. Then i discover they make a wiper arm puller tool. lesson learned. TIME FOR MORE RAIN-X!
