Bogging down/backfiring when temp is reached.
Re: Bogging down/backfiring when temp is reached.
A "$30" scanner is typically one that simply shorts the pins in the ALDL connector, to flash the DTC codes on the SES light. Will only work up to the 1993 LT1. For those, you can do the exact same thing with a 1-cent paper clip. The scanner you got was probably an Actron, and it says right on the label of the box it will work on a 94 - but it will not.
For your 94, you need a real OBD-I scanner to pull the codes.

He did, I already bought the $30 scanner, so I figured I'd try the paper clip just to see what it'd do. A couple of buddies think it's injectors, I think it might be as well. That'll be the next area I check. Other possibilities at this point also include timing and O2 sensors, just gonna keep troubleshooting until I have the cash for one of those cables
Re: Bogging down/backfiring when temp is reached.
Yes I am. Neither worked so I'm moving on to other things, as I mentioned in my previous post. I didn't figure the paper clip would work but I had one laying around so I tried it anyway. Nothing doing, so on to the injectors.
Re: Bogging down/backfiring when temp is reached.
Neither worked BECAUSE THE $30 SCANNER AND A PAPER CLIP BOTH DO THE SAME THING - SHORT TWO ALDL PINS TOGETHER.
I explained that in my post. 93 was the last year that would work.

I'm aware of that, I just figured it wouldn't hurt to try it. I didn't figure it would work, but I tried it anyway, that's it. I'm exploring every avenue possible at this point just for the simple fact that I'm trying to get her fixed.
