Blown Or All Motor?
Blown Or All Motor?
Over the past couple of years I have seen more and more gm late model owners putting a super or turbocharger on their cars. I remember how most american car supporters always bashed the importers on the basis that the only way they could get power out of their v4 or v6 bangers was to strap 20 turbos on it lol, but now there are more american guys putting forced induction on their cars. I know it's cheaper just to lower the motors compression ratio and put a turbo or supercharger on there, but do you think it's better to do this or to shell out some xtra money and get the all motor HP and say that you can beat people straight up without any power adders? What do u guys think...
Re: Blown Or All Motor?
i think the main attraction for forced induction is the drivability.
you can do a nasty heads/cam on a stock internal LS1 and hit 450rwhp.
or you can put a turbo/sc and a intercooler and make the same.
however the everyday driveability will be MUCH worse with the h/c setup. not to mention it's almost no work to run a lower boost pulley for every day, and swap out to alot more for the track. again adding to the streetability of the boosted setup.
and i think alot of s/c and turbo setups will pass emissions with the proper exhaust setup and tune. most h/c will not.

Not sure the musclecar mentality is against supercharging; go to any car show and watch everyone druel over a big blower hanging out of the hood of a lot of classic musclecars!
A supercharger will take out the stock pistons, IMO it's not if but when. Therefore you'll still be getting into the engine and will undoubtably be upgrading heads/cams anyway along with adding forged pistons. As stated above the street manners of a blown car are great.

Yep that's the main reason I'm doing turbo's. Get a all forged internal motor and turn the boost up when I need it.
But it really depends on what you want to drive, a lopey badass car or a whistling badass car.
Re: Blown Or All Motor?
I have heads, cam, and exhaust but I'm sick so it's not enough, and if I keep the car I will be putting on a supercharger. Honestly though, I don't think it's possible to make your car scary fast, like 120 1/4's unless you put a supercharger on. Unfortunately it's also scary expensive to buy a supercharger; what are they, about 4 grand?
Re: Blown Or All Motor?
LOL, I didn't even notice the V4 thing in the original post. Nice. Dude, it's an I4.
You can make a 120mph NA car. It'll cost you a lot of money, and in the case of an F-body, you'll need to bore and stroke the motor.
Doesn't the new Z06 run 11.7@124?

Re: Blown Or All Motor?
Well H/C NA costs much less to attain say 400rwhp... certainly not the $5000 for the supercharger or turbo alone.
On a side note, how badly would a lower compression(say 9:1) kill power compared to a stock 10:1 compression if you are planning on FI, but can't afford it yet?

Re: Blown Or All Motor?
Lower compression would suck away a good bit of power, although I can't say how much. I'd recommend hanging on to that stuff and installing it once you can afford the SC or TC.
Even at 400 rwhp, though, an FI car has better road manners than a heads/cam car. It's a small difference at that point, but it only gets worse from there.
