big problem with shifter
big problem with shifter
I have a 95 z28 convertible and my problem is. My gear shifter isnt working all the time. The other day i went to take it out for a cruise and it wouldnt get out of park.....so i took off the console and put vaseoline on the shifter ..Well it helped until, yesterday i went to go take it out for a drive and it was the same thing ....does it have anything to do with my brakes because when i push my brake in and then push the button to go into gear it wont go...what can i do to make it not stick all the time. spent alot of money last year on the z28. and hate to see it sit all the time
help.....thank you
help.....thank you
Re: big problem with shifter
I can't give you specifics, because I've never had any trouble with one, and I'm assuming your car is automatic, but there is a switch on the brake pedal that is supposed to keep you from shifting out of park unless you press the pedal. Maybe it's going out or sticking up or something. I kind of doubt that there is resistance within the shifter/console itself, but you never know.
Re: big problem with shifter
Check the brake-park interlock solenoid... it should be near the shifter under the console trim. It's very easy and cheap to replace. The part number at GMPartsDirect is 012538778. You can probably pick one up at your dealer's parts desk.
Basically the solenoid is going out and it doesn't think that you're pressing the brake pedal to shift out of park, even though you really are, hence not letting you shift out of park.
