Better Starting?
Better Starting?
Sometimes it takes me 3, 4, even 5 tries to start my car. What can I do for better starts? I searched and came up with little info. Should I go for Taylor or MSD Wires? If I do, how much would that cost? And how about the MSD DIS-4?
Re: Better Starting?
Wires won't make a difference in starting the car.
It could be a number of things that are causing your problems. Describe the problem.
Could be the starter, could be a fuel problem, etc.

Re: Better Starting?
Sometimes when it almost starts, but doesn't, it makes a metal sound as if it's barely scraped something. Actually, if you've ever heard a propeller plane that doesn't start on the first try, and it makes that winding echo sound. Kinda like that. But that isn't necessarily bad, right?
Re: Better Starting?
Hook up a fuel pressure gauge, after the fuel pump primes, the fuel pressure should hold. If it drops, then the check valve in the fuel pump is bad. Without fuel pressure at startup, starting is difficult.
Re: Better Starting?
Ok, thanks. Would a bad fuel pump also cause stalling? Every once and a long while, especially if turning around in a driveway and going up a hill, my car will act like it's going to stall for about 1 and 1/2 seconds.
Re: Better Starting?
Long crank times is usually caused by a fuel related problem.
e.g. if your fuel injectors are leaky, then your fuel pressure will drop off in a short period of time, and then your engine has to crank longer to build back up the fuel pressure.
Could be something else, like a bad fuel pump. Fuel pressure test is a good idea.

Re: Better Starting?
to test if it is a fuel problem you can turn the key on for a few seconds(3-4) then off then on again for a few seconds(3-4)...to this 2-3 times then try to start it and if it pops right off then your fuel system is not staying primed. mine did this and it was a bad fuel pump.

He isn't having long crank times if I read his post correctly? Aren't you essentially just hearing one clunky click sound, and when you turn your key back you hear the end of a small motor stopping?
If so, it could be the starter. I am having this problem also.
