They are all pretty much the same. The 01s and 02s have a LS6 intake manifold which I think gets rid of the EGR.

I also believe the head design is little better in the 01;s and the 02's someone correct if I am wrong. So the basic answer to your ? is 2001 and 2002 are better b/c they make more power but any Ls-1 is a good choice if you ask me. JMHO

Last year designs are usually the best since bugs get worked out in previous years.

98's have the biggest injectors, but that ls6 intake would have been nice

I would either get a 98, or an 01/02. The 01 and 02 have more power to the ground with much better exhaust manifolds and LS6 intake and the removal of EGR. 98 had bigger injectors and an agressive cam. I have heard of some electrical problems with 99's and I just hate the year 2000 for w/e reason, but they are also fine.

I think 2000's were like a cross-over year? I mean, they still had the true "LS1" intake, not the LS6, but didn't the EGR system get eliminated in 2000? I can't remember for sure on that one?

While the cam from '98-'00 technically had more lift, it wasn't necessarily a "better" cam.....the lower lift '01-'02 cam (6.0L truck engine cam apparently?) has a flatter torque curve AFAIK, and obviously, as mentioned, '01-'02 got the LS6 intake.

Really though, you can't go wrong with any year.....they all respond well to mods, and I don't think there's any difference in the heads from '98 - '02 (just intake and exhaust manifolds as mentioned).

you can pick up a 98-99 for 10k or less and for say 3k in mods go close to 13 flat (or better!) the ls1 is a good motor. basically the same in all years. then mods such as lid, cai, headers, catback, lca's,panhard bar, drag radials. ready set GO!.

I'm not gonna hold this against you since you have a vert. and are probably a little slower(only because of weight, not knocking your car). But don't most LS1's run close to 13 flat without a single mod? Good driver of course. If anything they atleast run low 13's. Spend 3k on mods for an LS1(nitrous excluded) and you should be in the 11's. Heck I'm sure it's been done several times spending 3k on an LT1 and getting to the 11's. Just my opinion.

To answer the original question, I think pretty much any LS1 is a good choice given it's a nice car. If you really want the LS6 intake just spend some extra cash to get it. I'm sure you'll still spend less buying a 98' and then getting the intake vs buying an 01' or 02' just to have it already. Although there are subtle differences an LS1 is an LS1. Just find something nice in your price range and I'm sure you'll be happy.

hello jayroll, i don't want to start a flame but ther are only a couple people claiming to have run into the 12's stock. i can't believe it with a restrictive air lid and muffler (except on ss & ws6). rapidmotor sports had a test camaro they ran stock 13.3. with several bolt ons they got it running 11.8's or better. i don't want to come on this board and make false claims that 3k in mods someone can run 10's. its all relative. sure you can buy a cheaper car and go fast. that was not the question that started this thread.

You can run 10's in 3k. A lot of weigh reduction, and N20.
But your car won't run for much longer, or even be remotly street driveable in the 10's.

Well I never said anything about anyone running in the 12's stock. I know it's been done, but it's very few and far between. As you mentioned(like I did) low 13's are very feasable on a bone stock car. That's exactly what I was saying. Spending 3k to drop 3/10ths to get to that 13.0 mark you made reference to is just crazy. Unless someone has the worse combination of parts possible(which is still probably gonna net faster than 13 flat) or something seriously wrong with their car, spending 3k is gonna give you much better than 13.0. I can't imagine anyone spending 3k to drop just 3/10ths until they start getting really fast( around mid 11's or faster). My point is, I wasn't trying to slam you or anything, I was just pointing out to you, and also the original poster, that spending 13k on an LS1(10k for the car and 3k for the mods) is going to give you one heck of a fast car, much better than the 13 flat, and that's nitrous excluded. Then throw in any of the good factors, like weather, traction, and driver skill, heck even nitrous if you want to, and now the car is much faster. As the original poster was asking about which is the best LS1 to mod. I didn't want them to be dissapointed to only get 13 flat out of an LS1 after 3 grand in mods, when you can spend much less than that and get 13 flat out of an LT1. The LS1's just respond very well to modifications, and careful selection of parts and their combination with each other will give you a very dominant car for the 3k you spent to mod it.
