Battery Gauge

I am going to try and replace the ammeter or battery gauge because it doesn't work. I will be installing a new separate gauge. I just want to know where the sensor is at that sends the information of what the voltage is...is it part of the alternator or is it separate? I'm not even sure what it is called.
Thanks
Bill

Re: Battery Gauge

no sensor, its in the gauge, on the new one, just run a key on power wire(along with ground and a illumination[dash lights]) wire to the gauge

Obviously, you can add an ammeter, but the factory gauge is a volt meter.
