I have a 3.8 that makes a real bad noise when i start it when it is cold out. it sounds like metal hitting metal. it only lasts for a few seconds and then stops when the revs drop under 1500 and runs fine after that. What could this be. i dont want to cause any major damage to the engine.

Grinding noise, tapping noise? If grinding, maybe an idler pulley bearing, if tapping, maybe a collapsing lifter that quiets when oil gets to it and it pumps up again. For the lifter, Rislone used to be an used back in the day, don't know if it's made anymore.

 

yeah its a tapping noise. is rislone an oil additive? ill see if i can find it.
