bad alternator?

i replaced my battery the other day because it was dead. tonight i put in the new one and the car just drained it even though i drove it for 2 hours after, bascially the same as what happened to the first battery. does this sound like a bad alternator? the new battery first read around 13 volts, but after a while it went down to around 10 with the car running. after i shut the car off it was below 8.

Re: bad alternator?

Yes, it could be the alternator. Take it and have it checked at someplace like autozone or pepboys. You could just have something drawing to much current and draining the battery.

Re: bad alternator?

With a good battery and alternator, engine running should show around 13.8~14.2 volts...

And have a load test conducted at your local parts store..... Just because the battery is new, it might have a bad cell...

If these check out, then you might have something drawing the battery down..( IE: audio system, interior light left on(on rear view mirror), corroded cables, etc..)

Re: bad alternator?

when i drove the car back i had the radio off the entire way and the heat/ac off also. the only thing on was the headlights. this was the second battery to do it as well. luckily for me my uncle has an electric motor shop and can do rebuilds for cheap. i removed the alternator myself this morning and dropped it off. took an hour. 40 min to find the right tools, 20 to get everything off.

thanks much.
