I believe it may be possible to tap into the fuse for the dash lights. That fuse is after the dimmer switch.
Shoebox has the dash panel and dimmer switch diagrams for a 1995. Might be similar to your 97. Appears the dimmer output wire is dark green from the dimmer to the fuse, then gray from the fuse to the panel.

I can't remember, but I'd say the best way is to go to radioshack and get a 20$ multimeter and check them to see which wire voltage changes when you turn the dimmer. Plus it might be something you need to use it again sometime, so it's good to have.
