Automatic Shfter button sticks in park...help

Hey there, Looking for some insight as to how to remedy a problem I'm haveing with my 95 Z28 LT1. When the car is in Park the shift button on the shifter sticks and doesnt want to release. It just started doing this pretty much all at once. I can however pull back on the steering column (wheel)about 1/2 inch or so(there is a little play in the column)(w/tilt) and the button will work. Sometimes it is more contrary than others and sometimes its no problem at all. I am aware that there must be some kind of rod in the column which controls the lock on the button. What should I look for and where. And what to do. Thanks

my T/A was doing that before i had my trans rebuilt last fall (trans was slipping and needed an overhaul)

I'm pretty sure it has to do with the brake safety switch where you have to have your foot on the brake to shift out of park..I'm not sure exactly where its at, whether its down by the brake pedal or down under the car by the trans, but since my car has been fine after the trans was rebuilt, im thinking its somewhere under the car near the transmission
