Auto shifter button hard to press when cold

Question guys..I have a 1995 Z28 and my auto trans button is very hard to press in when car is cold. After Google ing it I see lots have that problem. Without taking whole console apart, is there any quick way to remedy this? I was thinking of spraying a small amount of a electronic contact cleaner and lube I have into the space next to button. Any other thoughts?

There a big staple pushed in from the side that has to be removed to remove the handle.

Re: Auto shifter button hard to press when cold

OK...I found that removing the ashtray and pulling up on the rod underneath it enables me to shift out of park easily when cold and have been doing that on cold mornings. Last time the plastic black tube cover of the rod came off. Do I really need this cover to be on, or can I just leave it off? In other words, does that cover really do anything, or does it need to be on? Thanks!

Re: Auto shifter button hard to press when cold

Update: Started car today, removed ashtray insert, and went to lift rod & found the plastic tube covering the rod was gone...must have fell off and went back into the console. I can't get to it without taking whole thing apart. So I really hope that sleeve wasn't necessary.
