Anyone ever had this happen?

Yesterday I got in my car and turned the key to "on" and I looked the guages. My oil pressure gauge went all the way past 80psi(buried the needle, kinda like the gas guage does). But then I started the car and it jumped back down to the normal pressure. Could my pressure sending unit be going bad? I rebuilt the motor 1300 miles ago and just took the sensor apart and re-siliconed it, so it worked great before and after the rebuild. Let me know what you guys think.

So long as it reads correctly when running, I don't think you need to worry about it. Probably just a diagnostic to make sure the gauge can read through it's entire range.

If he has a 95 Z like his screen name suggests, there is no such diagnostic. Probably a bad sensor or wiring.

That's a bad call. None of the LT1 or LS1 cars did anything like that.

Most likely you sending unit has gone bad causing it to read high with no pressure applied to it. Kinda wierd.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the replys. The guage only did this one time, and only when the key was turned to on, not when the car was running. Its been fine since then. Thanks again for the help
