Another 160 Thermostat question...quick

So i've been lookin around for a 160 thermostat to keep my engine a little cooler in the florida heat.

I called advanced told them "95 Z28" and they said they only have a 180 degree for it.

I called a "raceshop" and they told me they didnt carry any thermostats there, but to just call advanced auto parts and tell them you want a 160 thermostat for a small block chevy, as its a universal fit.

I called back and they had one, but said it might not run with the sensors or something...

Its $4, will it work, or do I need to look for one 95 specific?

Thanks

You need the LT1 specific, long thermostat. The "universal" SBC thermostat is not correct for the application.
A Hypertech part #1008 is a 160° thermostat for the LT1.

summitracing.com, jegs.com, etc. My local O'Reilys actually had one..The speed shops should have them, I can't imagine them not having one. If you have more than 1 around you check them out.

Autozone can order one, if you go in and ask them.

Yes, you will need to program the fans to come on sooner.

You don't need any reprogramming for it to work. It is beneficial to have the fan temps reprogrammed, but not necessary.

I take it that its something I cant do myself...

I know MadZ28 can do it, but i was gonna wait on that until I got my headers which will be in the next 6 months or so...

any cheap alternative to reprogram the fans?

You could do it yourself with programming software, like LT1_Edit or TunerCat. Or even with a Hypertech Power programmer (used, not new, make sure the original owner programmed his PCM back to stock or it won't work).

To get the FULL benefits of the lower temp t'stat, the fans need to come on sooner, and it helps to add a couple degrees of timing.

This info is LT1-specific.... and it would make more sense to post a question like this in LT1/LT4 Engine Tech.

Re: Another 160 Thermostat question...quick

In the meantime, just put it in... You won't have any issues whatsoever, you just won't be getting the maximum benefit. I'm sure it WILL help keep the car slightly cooler....

I know in my 96 with no other changes / adjustments, it keeps the temps around 3/4 on the gauge when idling in traffic for long periods, where the 180 Deg. was just barely touching the limits....

So should at least help to keep the temps down, but ideally you want the fans to come on earlier as well, and the other above mentioned adjustments to get the maximum benefits.
