Alternator

WOW... Im running new wires for my new alternator.. standard AC delco on a sbc... and for some reason the dam thing wont stay runnig when I pull a battery cable for the good ol easy "alternator test"... Im rewiring due to old wires and a new MSD 6AL box... I feel like an idiot its 3 dam wires:dunno:

You can easliy tell if an alternator is working with a meter. Maybe not yours, but modern alternators can be ruined by the "alternator test" you describe.

Don't do that "alternator test", can fubar stuff. You need to put a multimeter on the output stud and measure voltage there. It should be a fraction of a volt higher than your battery reading with the engine running. ~ 13.5 - 14 is normal at the stud.

Were you aware of the possibility of engine run on when you install an MSD box?

The MSD wires? They have schematics on their website.

no... the actual wires to the alternator.. the MSD was easy... compared to this lol

Fat wire (positive) goes to the insulated post on the back. The other two wires should be in a plug that fits right in.

yeah thats the thing that plug is gone... i need to know what wires go there; to make the plug... sorry that woula been easier to say i guess... my bad
