Question Air pump Wiring

I am replacing my air pump with one I bought from someone online. The pump coming off my car has three wires (orange, black, and red) coming out of the pump into a three prong connector. In addition, when I pulled the lower part of the plastic housing off, the pump outlet has a small piece of plastic (about the size of an elongated AA battery) with a spring on the end of it. I assume this is a check valve.

The new pump I bought has an orange wire that runs from the pump to the three prong connector. A black wire also exits the pump, but was cut by "Mr. Helpful" (the guy that sold me this piece of crap). This black wire exiting the pump does not look like it is supposed to go the connector but somewhere else. Also, from somewhere else, a black and red wire come back into the three prong connector (these were also cut for my "convenience" by this jerk). I can provide a picture if anyone knows anything about this.

Where can I buy a new air pump if I can't make this one work?

Sorry for the length

Oh, FYI the guy who sold me this piece of garbage is Eric Gustafson. BEWARE!

UPDATE: Eric refunded my money, so he is a standup guy. I guess I'll trash this one and buy another.

I have one from my 95 hawk that i just took out with all the plumbing. Make sure the right one fits your car.

I don't know what kind of emissions testing you have, but you may want to consider leaving the pump off. It is only useful for the first 4-5 minutes when you start your car to help heat the cat up. Just make sure you have a good fuse in and there should be no SES light.

On a car with the vented optispark, it also functions as the optisparks drying system, feeding air inot the opti.

This is year dependant. IIRC 96 and down will not throw a code, but other years will. Do a search and find the needed info.

How does it do that, since the vacuum harness for the vented Opti does not connect to the AIR system?

93-95 (OBD-I) will not set a code for the AIR pump being disconnected, as long as there is a good fuse in the circuit. 96/97 (OBD-II) will set a code for the missing pump, since there is a flow detector.

You might want to add a signature that includes the year of your car as a minimum. We have no idea what car you are even talking about, although many seem to have assumed its an LT1. If, for example, your car is a 94 or newer, the pump and plumbing from a 93 will not work, because it is quite different, even the the extent of the pump being mounted on the body, rather than the engine.

My mistake. I have a 94 with a vented (yes, I know -I'm still not sure how the previous owner managed this, but after 12 months of driving with no trouble, I'm sure it's not mis-mounted. So either he changed the cam, somehow changed the cap of the opti, or bought an offbrand that has the vented holes on the 94 down key shaft system).

Anyway, in my head I was thinking that the intake was coming from the AIR pump pushing air through, versus the real way it is set up in that the engine pulls air from the elbow via vacuum in the block.
Again my mistake. I shouldn't speak when unsure and/or at 4am after a stressful night. Sorry all!

Holy smokes! Thanks Injuneer! This post just made me realise something. All this time I had thought because I ripped my AIR pump out, that I screwed myself out of the benefits of the air flow through the opti.
And it just hit me -not needing the AIR pump for the vented opti, I can hook mine up properly and get my system vented fully.
Woohoo!

Thanks.

Actually....you may wanna check a dealer for a recall on that AIR pump. I got SEVERAL letters from my dealer a few years ago about it for my 95 Z28 (never responded because I removed the pump). Maybe you can get it replaced for free? I actually still have the letters and dug em out. They read:

"Date: 3-28-01
Dear customer: Your 95 vehicle is in need of a campaign correction. According to our information, you have been notified by the manufacturer of the existing problem, but have not yet taken steps to have this correction made (oopsie....my bad ). This is a safety modification to the air injection reactor (A.I.R.) pump system failures and is repaired for you at no charge."

It's a good thing I dug these out because I seem to have forgotten about another recall. "Incorrect front axle status signal to EBC4 ABS." Oopsie....good thing I don't even drive this car in the rain...LOL!
