This is a shot in the dark, but couldn't you just pull the air bag fuse?

There is a yellow harness on the steering column that you should disconnect also. Supposedly the air bag module may still have a stored charge that can set off the air bag even after power is disconnected.

Re: aftermarket steering wheel on 4th gen?

Pull the battery negative cable and wait at least 20 minutes, before touching anything - that bleeds off the reserve power in the DERM module. (Remember your radio security code ). Then dissonnect the yellow harness connector at the base of the steering column. The procedure described in the Chilton F-Body manual is pretty good.

Remove the 4 Torx screws that hold the steering wheel cover/airbag on the wheel. You reach them from behind. When the cover comes off, you need to disconnect the harness connectors for the airbag, and for the steering wheel radio controls. Now you are looking at a large diameter "coil" that allows the wires to function as the wheel turns. I believe there is a spring-type c-clip holding the coil on the colum. Remove the c-clip and the coil. Then remove the nut that holds the wheel on the coumn (make sure the wheels are straight ahead). Then use a 2-bolt puller to remove the wheel.

If you already have the install kit, is it the 3rd Gen F-Body kit? The collar that comes with the kit may rub on the top edge of the steering column surround. The diameters don't match well. The install kit comes with a steel spider and a rubber bellows that fills the gap between the wheel and the surround. It isn't the best looking piece. They have a "billet spacer" to use in place of the spider/bellows. But its almost $30. You can also get a Pontiac "arrowhead" horn button that makes a nice touch.....

And for anyone who is going to post a comment along the line of... "oh my God, you took out your airbag - you're going to die and go straight to hell" - this is a "track only" car, and I've seen the aftermath of an incident where the airbag went off when a trans blew.... on the track.

That really looks good fred,I like the pontiac horn button.Yeah this is a track only car as well and really the only street time it does is to the track and back,I have seen some serios injuries due to the air bag being deployed at the track as well hence the new wheel. Thanks for your help.
