Re: Aftermarket Extended Waranties??

Mine was a little pricey. Came out to over $800 a year. Covered quite a few parts but when my water pump was leaking they replaced the water pump and refused to replace the serpentine belts that squeaked as a result of the dex cool getting on it because the belts are considered a "wear and tear" part therefore are not covered under the warranty despite the chain of actions that caused it to be faulty. Also you have to look at the deductible. Mine had a $100 deductible.

I looked at the list of parts covered on that site, looks pretty good, I am interested to see how much they quote you.

I bought a six year aftermarket warrenty when I bought my car six years ago. It's about to close........

It cost $1600 (canadian) at the time, and there is a $100 deductible.

i bought a 4 year aftermarket warranty on my car, $1000 with a $0 deductable. they've been pretty good so far, my window motor, water pump, starter, intake leak were all fixed with $0 from me, just drop it at the shop then pick it up.no problem. only 1 more year to go though.

Looks like I should have shopped instead of just taking the one the used car lot was pushing.

Re: Aftermarket Extended Waranties??

I'm not sure I understood the question. Do you mean aftermarket as a warranty other than GM or aftermarket to cover aftermarket parts? I assume you mean other than GM.

Back when my car was eligible for warranties (hehe!!) I once purchased an extended warranty by a company called Continental. The problem that I see is that you have to call for approval prior to take your car for repairs, and in one occassion, they sent one of their guys to the shop to verify the work I was about to get done, really needed to be done. After that, I said no more. I spent a bit more for a GM extended plan, and the dealer did most of the work, no questions asked.

I just picked an aftermarket warranty on my 99 Jeep w/ 80k miles on it. It covers the entire drivetrain from engine to trans to both differentials and finally the transfer case. $0 deductable and good for 5 years or another 100k miles. Cost: $1600.

Yeah, aftermarket as in other then the Factory Waranty, sorry for the confusion I didn't really know what to call it..

All my cars are out of the Factory Waranty and I know aftermarket parts are not covered, but I was just looking for a little more protection. Plus we are looking to buy a new (used) vehicle, '99 Ram SLT for my fiance, and the dealership has a 4yr unlimited milage waranty for an additional $1,995, and he said he would discuss the details when we come in for a test drive.. I actually started looking into other non-factory extended waranties to compare how the one offered by the dealership stacked up. I can't get to the dealership until Saturday so I guess we will see what they say.. That link above is cool though I have goten a few different quotes apparantly they represent a lot of different extended waranty companies..

Thanks for all the replies.

Re: Aftermarket Extended Waranties??

Stay away from them. If you want an extended warranty, get it from the manufacturer. It's more expensive, but you are far more likely to collect on it if it is needed. The aftermarket warranties are often worthless. Many of the companies will try in every way possible to avoid paying a claim. A favorite tactic is to require a rigorous maintainence schedule (different from the OEM schedule) and then deny a claim based on a minor deviation from the schedule. And so on.

I have had a bad experience personally and know of many others who have also. OTOH, I have had great serivce from GM's extended warranty. You can buy them at a considerable discount on line at http://www.gmoutlet.com/gmppfaq.html I have had excellent service from them.

But you can't even buy that is you are out of your factory waranty..

Example #3.

Example: On January 1, 2005 you try to purchase a GMPP on your 47 month old Corvette (Original GM In-Service date was December 1, 2001) with 9,000 miles on the odometer. You cannot purchase a GMPP because your vehicle is outside the original GM factory time/miles period. GM’s FIRM RULE is that you cannot purchase a GMPP on your vehicle unless it is within the 3 year / 36,000 miles (4 year / 50,000 miles for Cadillac) original warranty time/miles period.

Re: Aftermarket Extended Waranties??

Aftermarket warranties suck! I work at a dealer and see customers get hosed all the time with denied claims on legitimate mechanical problems. They try to weasel their way out of paying claims, say its normal wear, abuse and so on. Some companies even insist on used replacement parts, they send adjusters to verify your complaint, run you around and waste your time. Ive never had an aftermarket warranty and being in the repair field I would never suggest anyone buy one.

Off topic, but I'm selling my 99 Ram and I'm 15 mins outside of Philly. It has very low mileage at 43k and its given me zero problems, if you're interested let me know.

We are going to look at one she has her eye on, the onlt thing I don't like is that it has 90K miles, is yours 4X4, and what collor is it? PM me with a price and we might consider it.. BTW, if it is tu-tune she doesn't want it, I know she is looking for a solid color, preferably black, yellow, or green I think...
