ac question?

95z a4.. I put in a new air compressor and want to know if I can recharge it myself or if I have to take it to a shope to have anything else done to it. I don't need the ac right now, but i don't want anyone to turn in on and take a chance at burning up the compressor. I was also told that untill the ac system is recharged that I could not use my heater or defroster with out messing up the compressor, is this true. thanks for any help.

Unless you have a pump to pump the system down and gauges to check it, you can't do it yourself. It's a good idea to pull vacuum on the system and leave it a while to be sure that it is tight too.

If there's no refrigerant in the system the compressor shouldn't come on, pressure switch should keep it off. Since you've already done the hard work, and it's been open to the atmosphere, I'd bring it to a shop so they can pull a vacuum on it, then charge it.

Pulling a vacuum on the system is ESSENTIAL to good performance.

Heater doesn't use the compressor. Go ahead and use that. As has been mentioned, you can run the defrost, it just won't run the compressor along with it since the low pressure switch will keep it from cycling on.
