AC Fan Manual Wiring

Recently I deleted the AC in the car and would like to utilize the cooling fan for extra cooling when required. I have the SLP fan kit now for the right side fan but want to wire up the left side to run on demand on low and high with a switch without causing issues with the PCM. Not sure if it will or not.

Any help or advice would be great, thank you in advance.

Richard

Re: AC Fan Manual Wiring

I thought the SLP fan switch did both fans? There is no reason why it should not. If you want to go another route, there are fan switch diagrams on my website.

I thought it did to but unfortunately it doesn't, does the fan get signal to turn on from the PCM?

Re: AC Fan Manual Wiring

I have a SLP fan kit in my 95 Z28. It runs the fans on Low Speed, High Speed, or Off with the Toggle switch supplied by them in the kit. Works really good too. I still have my Air Conditioning. When the Toggle Switch is in the Off position and the A/C is ON, the fans run when they are supposed to.

I only turn the fans on if I get stalled in traffic and the temp rises higher than I want it to. In High Speed after about 15-20 seconds you can just watch the temp gauge going down.

Re: AC Fan Manual Wiring

Thank you for the replies, does yours run both fans then? Wonder if a part of the circuit is interrupted since the AC has been removed?

Thoughts?

Yes, both fans. I included some pictures of before and after if that helps.

Re: AC Fan Manual Wiring

Late 94 and up, there is no seperate, dedicated fan for AC. When you turn the AC on, both fans run at low speed. If the temp rises to 235*F, both fans run at high speed. With AC off, both fans come on low speed at 226*F, and switch to high speed at 235*F.

All of this is controlled by the PCM. You shouldn't have to do anything if you deleted AC. The fans will continue to work like they did when AC was not turned on.

Re: AC Fan Manual Wiring

Thank you all for your responses and advice, guess I will be tracking down why my other fan doesn't work. This started after I removed the AC and installed all new accessories on the front of the motor. My guess is a connection not plugged in all the way.

Thanks again

Richard

Re: AC Fan Manual Wiring

Here's the wiring diagram for the low speed/high speed fans. This is from the 96 factory manual. 97 will be the same. If you want to download a free copy of the 96 manual, go here:

LINK: 4TH GEN SERVICE MANUALS - (1993 - 2002) - Firebird Nation

If the control side of the relays are faulty you would have an SES light and codes P1641 (relay #1) or P1642 (relays #2/#3). The fan 12V power for the fans is fed directly to the relay from the red "+" box near the battery, protected by a fusible link.

Re: AC Fan Manual Wiring

Thank you Fred, great link to the manual. I appreciate that link a lot.

I noticed that the SLP kit pictured from Gaedbo was different than the one I got, I don't have the box like he does, my kit looks different, wonder if it's a new version. Anyways I will start tracking down the electric issue and let you guys know.

Thanks Richard

Re: AC Fan Manual Wiring

Just a update, it was the connector not making a good contact on the fan terminal. Guess it had been removed a few times in its life time.

Thank you for the info everyone.
