95-02 Camaro/Firebird 3.8 Buy It Or Not?

I'm hoping this thread can just be a general/fun discussion of all things fbody, especially the V6 fbody. All opinions welcome!

Hello everybody, I'm going to be selling my truck soon and will be replacing it with a manual transmission car of some type. I really like the fbody platform, and as you can tell from my sig, I already have a Z/28 so that's why I'm not looking necessarily for a V8 and so this will be my daily car. I definitely prefer the firebird look to the Camaro, but both are very nice looking.

So, do you like yours? Is it pretty quick?(I know 7-8 secs 0-60, but how does that feel compared to my Z/28 or my slow 4.2 V6 F150?) What do you like/dislike about the V6 fbodys? Any other cars you'd look at that are still quick but not fbodys? I'm generally interested in all cars, including the 4th gen Mustang 3.8, 4.6, and 5.0 and even 4 door cars.

I'm trying to stay in the 1-3k range and that's one reason I'm looking at the V6 fbodys.

So now, persuade me or dissuade me from buying a Camaro or Firebrd 3.8.

Me personally for that amount of money you can find a 95 -98 manual Prelude.. Honda's are fun to beat the **** out of and are extremely easy to work on. I have personally been "entertaining" the idea of picking another up , I had a N/A Prelude - it was a h22/H23 (hybrid mix) - it wasn't that quick but the suspension I had on it made it the most fun to drive through the mountains and canyons in AZ.. that car would not lose traction in corners. I'd imagine it woulndn't take much to make it a hell of a lot quicker ;P anyways cheers.

You know, there are so many fun little sports cars of the 90s that I completely forgot about the prelude. Anything is an option at this point haha!

Re: 95-02 Camaro/Firebird 3.8 Buy It Or Not?

My first F-Body was a '96 3.8 V6 Camaro 5 spd. Bought it brand new a few days after I turned 25 and could finally afford the insurance. I knew in late '95, when the 3.8 first appeared, that my first F-Body would be the 3.8 5 spd. In '95, I think they were only available with auto's at the end of the model year. I put almost 80K miles on that car in 2.5 years and the ONLY reason I got rid of it was to buy a new '98 Z28. I still have my '98 Z28 and love it, but I miss my '96 at times too. It was my first F-Body love! 200 HP and a 5 spd. was a great combo in '96! the 3.8 was a Buick derivative and a reliable and proven design! I especially liked the cockpit design of the '93-'96 Camaro and do miss that over my '98. I do like the '98-'02 Firebird body style too...wasn't a fan of the '93-'97 Firebird body though.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 3.8 V6 F-Body even today if I found one used in good condition if I were looking. Of course there's a HUGE power bump with the LS1, but the 200 HP V6 is definitely a fun car too!

Thanks for your input. I always like hearing first person accounts of cars. Especially the V6 because most seem to bash cars without the 2 extra cylinders.

The V6 cars are lighter up front, with overall better weight distribution. Upgrade the shocks/springs/swaybars/wheels/tires/brakes, add subframe connectors, and it would be a blast.

The biggest things you’ll miss relative to the V8 are the top-end power and the sound.

I got pulled over when I was young and naive tearing up some mountain twisties and given a speech.. I didn't understand it at the time because I believed it was all about driving the fastest possible.. ( obviously the speech was about speeding).. And the cop tried to explain to me that it's not about the speed of your car that makes driving up mountains enjoyable.. If you have to go this fast your not driving right.. He was right, I was cutting through the yellow lines wasting the road- "trying to be fast".. I don't cut through the yellow lines anymore, I drive the road as it was intended - I don't exactly go "the speed limit" but I respect it and drive in the lines and I understand what its all about... its about the handling - not about the power.. SO I don't care if the car is 4,6,8,12 cyls- If It has good handling.. I'm in

I got a similar ticket to yours. I wasn't exactly tearing up the twisties because it was Ford F-150 v6 pushed almost to its limit. The ticket was 72 in a 55 Now I'm way more careful in my camaro though.

I LOVE my Z28 w/400.1 RWHP, but on a mountain road, I'd take my wife's '11 RX8 with 1/2 the HP EVERY time for the fun factor! That thing has perfect 50/50 weight distribution! Funny thing is, she doesn't even care about cars...she wanted it because she likes the rear suicide doors...

I've been wanting a prelude daily too, lol. H22/5 speed, black with black interior, 4 wheel steering, and it needs to be a 92 for the rear seat "sexblocker." 190 HP in a car like that is no joke, especially at 8,000 rpm

It’s been a couple years since I made this thread, but since then I wound up buying a second Z/28 instead of a v6 car. Then I sold that one and now drive a 01 Mustang GT as my daily. Talk about fun car. I bet a Prelude is fun too but before you buy one, you’ve got to try a new edge GT. You’ll love it.
