5 years this engine has been sitting
5 years this engine has been sitting
Time to resurrect the project car ... specifically this engine has been sitting on its stand for the past 5 years (3 years in separate garage, 2 years in connected garage, all major ports taped, oil, coolant, and with spark plugs). After getting built it was broken-in on an engine dyno. Just not sure what issues I face today ...
Options:
A) Just slap it in ...
...
...
...
Z) Take it to an engine builder for inspection
Starting to talk with shops next week, just thought I'd see what others have to say....

Re: 5 years this engine has been sitting
sell it and start over with an LS3. just a thought. but if your gunna keep it i would at least have it looked over by someone who knows what they are looking for. ya know. pull the pan check for play. check compression. inspect seals for signs of age wear. if all that is good hell just put it in. or just take it back to the engine dyno guy. im sure he would have no problem running it again and letting you know if he sees any problems.

Re: 5 years this engine has been sitting
Drain oil... look for moisture.. take a looking inside intake manifold look for signs of moisture. Pull spark plugs look for signs of moisture. Turn engine over with wrench, does it feel smooth?
Its hard to tell from the picture but all the aluminum parts look great! Not really any signs of extreme oxidation like you would see if the engine was sitting in a damp environment.
Do the basic checks that i mentioned and if everything checks out crank her up. You might want to pay your fuel rail and injectors a little attention though get the injectors flowed, fuel rail cleaned out, even if the fuel rail was completely drained there could be the green slime you get from evaporating fuel which would loosen as soon as you feed it fresh gas
If you wanted to pull the oil pan and check out how everything looks go for it, my only concern would be moisture but if the cylinder walls and crank looks good crank it up
