Alright guys I am looking to do a 3rd gen project car. I am aiming for a carb setup. I don't really care what it is to begin with, I might build up a motor on the side or so and put it in later. I am aiming for a carb setup just because well I haven't done anything with them before and they seem slightly easier to tune(just turn a screw)

I ad an 85 back in the day but it was for 2 years(16-18) I know alot about cars but not as much as I know now.

any specific problems too look for on a 3rd gen. Certain major rust problems to avoid, etc...


Car is mainly going to see track, some street duty and such. I REALLY want t-tops on it.

check the integrety of the frame right behind the steering box. some experienced problems with the bolts tearing out due to the force of turning. i think it was more of an issue with the Zs and the IROCs (and relating pontiac models) due to the resistence of the wide tires.

that is why they installed the "wonder bar" on later models.

it can easily be patched with a welder...but it's something to look for.

Get under the car and look for rust. I went to look at an IROC once that looked mint. The carpet was coming through the holes in the floor. Yuck.
