350 SBC upgrade recommendation

I am getting ready to do some upgrades to my car and was just looking for recommendations and set up suggestions. it a a stock 350 has 487x heads (been told these are 72 lt1 heads but idk if that is what the block is from), qjet carb, exhaust manifolds...bone stock (other than 1.6 roller rockers on intake and 1.52 on exhaust. unless i have that backwards) and 700r4. i need a new carb and i am looking to get a new cam and lifter kit. was looking at a street avenger 770 (ik its probably too big) with thumpr cam kit(k12-600-4) with hi perf hei, superconductor wires and ngk iridium plugs. cant really afford an intake right now, although it will be suggested i am sure, as i am also gonna be redoing the front end. appreciate all suggestions, photos, feedback, etc. I am fairly new to the forum haha

Re: 350 SBC upgrade recommendation

Does your budget take into account labor cost, or are you going to be doing the work yourself? Having gone through some of this myself, I always worry when I see heads/cam and daily driver, as some of these things can take some time to flesh out.

You should create a signature with details about your vehicle, then post this in the most fitting section of the forum.

In any case, if the bottom end is in good condition, head/cam comb is typically where you will see the most gain in performance. On a $1000 budget, a cam and a port and polish of the heads would be a good start. I am not at all knowledgeable on carbs, but where ever you pick up the cam, I would ask for a carb recommendation, or if the current carb will work.

The downside to the port and polish is that the heads could be at the machine shop for awhile, which is hard on a daily driver. Another option would be to find a set of heads at a junk yard, then have the work done to those keeping your car going until you are ready to upgrade.

Re: 350 SBC upgrade recommendation

As I recall from your earlier thread about suspension upgrades, you have a 2nd Gen (1979). Best place to get tech help is in the tech forums, not in "New Member Intro". Your question would be better in "Classic Engine Tech", except for the fact that we just don't seem to have too many 2nd (or 3rd) Gen owners on the site any more.

An alternative would be "General 67-02 F-Body Tech". I can move this to one of those forums for you, if you want.

Re: 350 SBC upgrade recommendation

You can go talk to your local Speed Shop ,Engine bulders. And or talk to the Cam manufacturers and give them your specifications .And what you want to do with the car. Then you go from their. Remember all the parts have to match up to work together,Otherwise you are jus wasting your time and money.
