Question 2nd Gen Oil Pan Change

Is it possible to replace the oil pan with the motor in the car on a 79 camaro with a Gen1 small block? How much clearance is needed between the cross member and pan? I have a scatter shield also. Is it possible to undo motor mounts and jack front of motor enough to replace the pan? Thanx to all that reply.

I removed the oil pan and replaced the oil pan gasket on my '81 Z28 without removing the motor... I unbolted the motor mounts and raised the motor with a jack with a piece of wood in between the jack and oil pan... When it was raised high enough I used one or two small pieces of 2x4 under each mount and slowly lowered it until it was securely resting on the 2x4's... Then I removed the pan which may take some finagling to get it out... You have to make sure you have enough clearance under the hood when you raise it too... Like the distributor cap, etc.

I bit the bullet hard and pulled the motor and replaced the oil pan and complete clutch set and flywheel with a Centerforce Dual Friction. I hope this thing can handle 500HP? Anyway I am having some clearence problems with the Hurst Super Street Shifter and the tunnel of the floor pan. I beat the tunnel back with a 5lb hammer and did alittle trimming. I really dont want to make a huge hole that the shifter boot wont cover. It came out nice but I haven't gone under and reinstalled the trani and shifter to see if I have enough clearence now? Has anyone ran a M-22 rock crusher and Hurst Street Super Shifter in a Second Gen 79 camaro? If so what did you do for clearence. Also doesnt look like my stock 4 speed console is going to fit without some major mods or possibly cutting a notch out of the side to clear the shifter and boot. I had this same problem with my old Mr.G bang shifter but I was able to shim the console over a little to just fit, but with the Hurst thats over about 1/2" more and shifter boot relocated it's not looking good for the console. Anyone else run into this and have a easy fix?
