2.73 or 3.23

I'm looking for either a 6-speed or 3.23 auto LT1 Z right now. I'd prefer the stick, but I'll take the auto if its a good deal, I just dont want 2.73's. Is there anyway to tell which gears an auto has? I havent found any way to do it from the VIN, so I have no idea when I'm looking at autos. Anyone?

Look at the sticker on the driver's side door for the gear code:

GU2 = 2.73's
GU5 = 3.23's
and GU6 = 3.42's (if you're looking at a 6-speed)

Don't knock 2.73's 'til ya try them though......they haul a$$ on the highway!!! AND, I posted the 1/4 mile time in my sig with 2.73's!

thanks. Are LT1 2.73 cars noticeable slowly around town than 3.23's, or not much of a difference?

On a LT1 if you are able to select first gear it has 3.23s.

Since most people claim a tenth or two going from 3.23 to 3.73, it's probably about the same between 2.73 and 3.23. You probably won't notice a whole lot of difference except through first gear.

If you find a good deal on one with 2.73s, don't pass it up though, it will just give you a reason to go straight to 3.73s.

i have 2:73's and just did some highway driving and got 25mpg. that was 289miles on 11.38 gallons. unless your running at the strip alot you will probably have traction issues over 3:42's. on the street. just my 2 cents worth.

Exactly. They are great for the highway (awesome mpg) and in an LT1 it puts you right at the torque peak at about 85 (2000ish rpms). Very entertaining to pass people without a downshift.

Have you felt a second gear pull from 55-90? It is like a train is pushing ya.

Im not planning on doing any gearing mods this summer. So it is worth having 3.23's for the street? Ill probably go to the track some, but I'm more concerned about having more punch off the line for just the fun to drive factor. It seems that the difference is minimal, though from what Im hearing.
