Contact SVE (Specialty Vehicle Engineering). When SLP was sold to Roush, Ed Hamburger (founder of SLP) kept the GM authorized modification part of the business, and rebranded it as SVE. Still in business here in NJ and cranking out high HP (1,050 HP Yenko) factory authorized packages for GM vehicles. I suspect they would have kept the SS records, and may be able to tell you about #1401.
Yes, there were no dark purple metallic SS's built in 1996. But there were only 117 dark purple metallic Z28 convertibles that year and the production totals will go lower if you break it down by transmission and the color and material of the interior. So the car is still low in production totals. Supposedly, there were only 3084 Z28 convertibles built in 1996. All of this information comes from a book written by Robert Casey, titled All 1993 -1997 Chevrolet Camaro Colors, Codes and Quantities.
I found the Registry website you referred to which had this picture of the Service Parts Identification tag.
From this information, the car is 1 of 20 dark purple metallic Z28 convertibles built with an automatic transmission and a beige leather interior. Hard to say where the Camaro SS build number tag came from. Probably the same place as the spoiler and hood did, a salvage yard. Personally, I like the the color combination.
