I was looking under the hood of my father in laws stock 1996 SS camaro and the air filter that is in it is for a not SS camaro and is a couple inches to small. I have been looking and I cant find a part number or any info on what filter is the correct filter for the 96 SS ram air setup. Any of you 96/97 SS guys know the part number for a filter? Thanks

Blackwing SLP Part #21004.

I don't believe SLP sells it anymore but there are lots of 3rd party vendors that still sell them. I assume the car still has the factory ram air setup?

I will do some looking around for that part. Yes the car still has the factory ram air setup. I did find a fram filter that fits pretty good for the time being but I would like to put a better flowing filter in there. Thanks for the help.

Re: 1996 SS air filter?????
I use K&N # 33-2018 (it's for a Jeep, but fits perfectly) but some people will argue not to use it on our cars because the oil is bad on the MAF. Whenever I clean / re-oil the filter I am VERY light on the oil and I let it dry out before putting the filter back in. Haven't had any problems in the 4 years the filter has been on my car.

I also know that WIX makes a filter for our cars, I have on in a box somewhere in the garage, I'll look for a part # for ya.

That would be great. Is the stock SS ram air intake a good one or are there aftermarket one that make better power? Thanks for the help on this.

People have claimed that you'll gain a horsepower or two by switching to a "CAI" type intake. I think the difference is more noticable at lower speeds but once you're up at highway speeds the ram air is just as good as a CAI imo (I've owned 2 Z28's with a K&N FIPK CAI on them before my SS. Both of them had the stock z28 intake before I put the CAI on)

The SS intake is unique, and hard to find so I'd keep it. If you go with a CAI, do NOT throw the SS intake away or sell it. When you see them for sale on here they usually go for a decent price.

Re: 1996 SS air filter?????
We planned to keep the stock SS intake on it unless another intake made a lot more power. Since it seems aftermarkets intakes have little gains if any its not worth it. I am enjoying learning about these cars and the difference of the normal z28 and the SS. Again thanks for the info.

Do you still have your 96 SS Owner's Supplement that came with the car? There's a bunch of good info in there about the modifications SLP did to the car.

Thanks for the links. I will ask my father in law about the supplement book. He is the orignal owner and is the type of guy that would have kept everything.
