1981 horsepower help

I pretty much need advice on how to make my car faster for cheap. I am 16 and have a minimum wage job. My dad is giving me his camaro soon and when i get it, i am supposed to race my friend... I really dont want him to win.

Is there anything I can do for very cheap to get it running better and faster. I would really appreciate the help.

Re: 1981 horsepower help

Intake, headers, exhaust which are pretty basic.

I'd look up 'free mods' to do to get the most out of what you already have.

I hope you're racing your friend at the track!

Re: 1981 horsepower help

Is it a turbo? If it is you can bump the boost, advance the timing and run some race gas. If it is just a 305 or 301, there is not much you can do on the cheap.

Re: 1981 horsepower help

You need to provide basic info about the car, like the exact engine, and the transmission type. According to the "Camaro White Book", the 81 Camaro had these engines:

229ci V6, 110HP
231ci V6, 110HP (California)
267ci V8, 115HP
305ci V8, 165HP w/ manual trans
350ci V8, 175HP w/ auto trans

While the 81 Firebirds had a turbo V8 available, I wasn't aware the Camaro offered a turbo in 1981.

Re: 1981 horsepower help

Your are vage on description... I gather its a 1981 Camaro, but what engine and sub model ???? State you live in ???

And is it stock or any modification ????

http://www.camarosource.ca/camaro_in....php?year=1981

A stock Z28 with a 350cid only had 175hp, unless Cali car, then 165hp .....

As for racing your friend, I'd wait.....

Re: 1981 horsepower help

A new engine was put in it in 91... another 350ci V8, 175HP w/ auto trans. I have no idea about the turbo situatuion but i dont think it has turbo. I live in Colorado. I dont know about the sub model. Oh and i dont know what mods are. And the car was bought in California.

So you want to go out racing at 16 years old. On the street is one stupid idea. You never know what the unknowns may be on the street and since you are only 16 I just would not do it. Plus at your age one ticket will hurt you for many years to come with insurance rates. On the track is different if you have experience.

Re: 1981 horsepower help

Doubt he can go to a track at 16 years old.

Full tune up, bump up timing, perhaps a more HP friendly carb and intake. Then full exhaust. Then gears and a stall converter.

Well, maybe all states are different. A guy I work with his 14 year old son races stock car with the big boys.
