1978 Macho Z Prototype No. 1

Greetings, I'm a new member to these forums. I have found the 1978 DKM No. 1 Macho Z from Dennis and Kyle Mechum. This is the same car that was featured in the Sept. 1978 Hot Rod Magazine.

It's a white car with Red stripes, roll bar, rear battery, functional air intake, hooker headers, straight pipes (catalytic converters only).

It has 95,000 original miles and is in unrestored excellent condition. Original paint, no rust.

Can anyone tell me the approximate value of this car, how sought after it might be, and how many of the Macho Z's exist?

Thanks in advance for the information.
Greg.

Pictures might help. I've never even heard of this kind of Camaro?

I cannot post a pic since I'm a new member. This car was in AZ for the first 20 yrs. of it's life. The exhaust system (hookers, catalytic and pipes) are original. The Koni adjustable shocks are original. Rochester carb stil on the car. The only items missing from the Mechum upgrades (most all of the features were listed in the magazine article) is the Fosgate stereo and the aluminum monocoque wheels.

The seller is asking $20,000.

Any thoughts on the value of this car?

What is it? What does it look like? Is it a Camaro? Put it on a webpage, and hook us up with a link.

Jeice, good thinking, here's a webpage I've posted some pics to. The White with the Red stripe (the worst pic of the three) is the pre-production unit No. 1 that was built in 1978.

If you search in yahoo or google on Macho T/A or DKM Macho Z you'll find a little information about the cars.

I am wondering if anyone on these boards has any knowledge of them, and their value.

Thanks, Greg.

My guess on the value of that car is maybe a few hundred bucks more than a Z28 of the same year in the same condition. $20K? No way!

It's a slightly modified version of one of the least desireable years of F bodies. Fancy graphics, a couple of suspension mods, and an internally stock motor with headers and the hood scoop modified to be functional. Big deal. We used to have a 78 Z28. It was not such a great car. Not a lot of power, didn't handle very well. The interior fell apart.
I don't see what makes this car valuable at all.

I appreciate everyone's input.

Bud is right, in that it is a stock car, with external motor and body modifications.

But it is also the only one made that year from a fairly decent pedigree being DKM. The '79 cars were a bit different in their packages (and even some of them varied from car to car).

There was one '78 built and 100 or so '79's.

The car is exactly the same (paint and all) as it was featured in Hot Rod in sept. '78.

Any other comments are welcomed!
