I want to hear from as many as possible about the issue with heat in a lt1 having the 160 stat in it. (My car blows barely luke warm air and I am trying to fix it.)


Is it possible to get nice hot air blowing with the 160 degree stat?

 

Never had a problem with heat and the 160° 'stat.

A clogged heater core is a much more common issue.

 

Thanks Shoebox. I had to post the thread b/c someone wrote on another that you could not get any heat with a 160 stat.

I have hooked a garden hose to the heater inlet before. First time some leaves and stuff came out, second time nothin really came out. Will try again and take it from there.

 

My heat will still get nice and toasty even on the coldest days with a 160 tstat. After a radiator flush my temperature guage never goes higher than 175ish, I think thats the main reason for my horrible gas milage, I hardly ever see over 200 miles per tank, on the highway!

 

A cooler running engine would not really affect mileage. The main reason the factory runs our cars hot is to reduce emissions. Less heat does increase HP, but not enough to seriously change your mpg.

 

I had a 160 and a 180. heat sucked with both, I should flush my heater core as mentioned.

 

Mine works fine.

 

Got the 160 Hypertech and the car runs at 175-180 in the summer. Now in CT in the cold the temp runs at 160 and the heat in the car is hot not super hot but hot enough to make me cozy.

Car performs better for some reason my stock heads love the cold thermostat.

 

I have a hypertec 160* stat and i can drive my car for an hour, open the radator cap and its not even luke warm. Ya the heat sucks. That my experience with one.

 

So your radiator is not even getting warm? Thats NOT normal.

 

Right i can put my finger in it and its warm, but like you said not like it should be. This is when the temp is around 40-50 degrees. I havent had my fans turn on since i got it tuned. Gauge is prolly at 160 in the car. I just dont see a problem in it as i dont drive the car in the winter very much.

 

Never had a problem with heat with the 160* t'stat. And it gets pretty cold in NJ winters.

 

I never had a problem either with a 160 t-stat and cold weather. I would be more inclined to agree with Shoebox in regards to a clogged heater core causing subpar heating performance.

 

Perhaps your thermostat is stuck open.

 

As for the original problem of afr lt1 ... I seem to recall some people have had issues with air trapped in the heater core and it's plumbing and may not have had enough flow to push the air out to where it could be vented at the bleeders. There might be clogging at that restrictor in the heater line. Have there been any problems when people have removed that restrictor?
I 've used a 160° thermostat for years and had no problems with getting enough heat in the winter. The car runs 175 - 185 on the highway, summer and winter by the gauge. (Freescan reports the WP sensor in close agreement) With the fan range set for 170-185 it never goes above 190 in the city, even on a 100° day.
