15" wheels, what tire size?

im getting ready to order a wheel/tire set.
1. 15x4 telstars on the front with 1 5/8" BS. 5 bolt 4.75 lug pattern
summit part number CLL-135401547 $119.95
what size tire? the 165 R15? what is the diameter of that tire?

2. 15x8 telstars on the rear with 5.5" BS 5 bolt 4.75 lug pattern
summit part number CLL-135807547 $135.95
what tire size? i read the 275/60/15, but that is 28" tall correct?
will that fit without any mods? i just need a regular street tire to go on these wheels, i have slicks for the track....

thanks
jesse

You may want to post this in the Drag Racing section. Just curious though, why a 15" wheel for the street?

Bad move, IMHO.

I wouldn't want to try and push a front-end heavy F-Body around a corner with 165 tires on the front. If you insist on doing this, at least make sure 1) the tire manufacturer recommends such a narrow rim width, 2) the tire has an adequate weight carrying capacity for the actual weight of your car, 3) that the tire diameter is in the range of 25.5-26.0", and 4) that you have good liability insurance.

In the back, yes, that's a 28" tire. Even if it fits, you'll need 4.10's or higher to offset the losses from the larger diameter. I had 28" QTP's and had to move the axle back 1/4" to keep the tires from rubbing on the front edge of the fender opening when they grew at high speeds. With 28" ET Drags, I've had to cut about 1.5" off the rear bumper cover edge.

Re: 15" wheels, what tire size?

fred, so i would need a 275/50/15 to make it a 26" tire correct? would anyother sizes make it 26-26.5"? i have read about ppl who run "skinnies" that are 4" wide on the street and dont have any problems. i dont plan to take curves fast or do any corner carving. the car is being setup for the dragstrip, it has limited street use.

rich, why is 15" wheels a bad choice for the street? i want to later get a set of 15x10 wheels that match the fronts for my slicks, thats why i chose to go 15's all the way around.
thanks,
jesse

A 275/50-15 would be the correct diameter.

Just keep in mind what happens if you are in a serious accident, even if the wheels/tires were not the cause. A sharp forensics engineer picks up on the under sized tires, and you get roasted in court by the lawyers for the "injured party". You lose, even if you're not guilty.

Just a thought.

i understand your concern fred, when i first bought the car (used 66K) the abs and asr system did not work, i then removed it from the car, so that would be another "liability".
just a thought, say if were in a crash and hurt someone else, and they knew i had "hopped up" my car with the mods i have done, i would be screwed in court too right?

also i found out another interesting point of racing my car, my insurance at work, my health insurance (which is really good and pays 100% after i meet the $500 deductible) will not cover any medical bills if i am injured while racing at the track....
and we all know that car insurance isnt going to pay for it....

i guess we all take chances when we mod/race our cars....

i appreciate your concern,
thanks
