Is this Optispark Failure?
Is this Optispark Failure?
ok, went out to my car this morning and it won't start. stutters every once in a while but will not run. i checked for spark at the coil wire with a timing gun and have spark there, check at 3 different sparkplug wires and will only get spark every once in a while, it's not in a pattern like it should be. won't get anything for several spins then get a few then nothing again. does this sound like a optispark failure? i think that it's probably the original one, don't see any signs of it having been changed and it's got 111000 miles on it. i can hear the fuel pump and smell some gas from the few times it's trying to start but that's it. it's been gettin to where it was hard to start in the mornings or after sittin for several hours too. haven't been driving it that much till the past few days so i don't remember if it has been doing the hard start for much longer than about two weeks. thanks for any help.
the opti or coil would be my first start. if you know anyone with the same style coil then you can try theirs. it only takes like two minutes to try another, because all you have to do is plug up the other one.without unbolting anything and its easy to get to. that will help you determine between the opti or coil. have you tested your plug wires to see if any are lose or damaged?
plug wires are pretty new, less than a year old. im getting spark at the coil wire, hooked my timing light to it and got plenty flashes. so i'm pretty sure it's beyond that. gonna try the test steps i found on here from shbox.com and see where that leads me but i'm beginning to think it has to be the opti unit. thanks.
ok i got it running, so it must not have failed. at least not completely. i pulled a couple of plugs out and they were soaking wet with gas,,, i had the key on for about 1/2 an hour the day before to check out the rear window defroster, but there shouldn't be fuel leaking past the injectors right? or is that a sign that they are going bad?
injectors is what i'm thinking, i checked the fuel pressure and it's good,,, gettin ready to make another topic on injectors but will post the question in here too. is there any real reason to go with aftermarket injectors for my setup. money is kinda tight right now because of the holidays and i can't really see going up in size right now because it will be a while till i do any big mods. about the only thing i'm thinking it may get real soon is 1.6rr's and underdrive pulley. eventually will most likely go with a supercharger setup on it but that is a while down the road. anyway back to injectors, i can get a set of rebuilds on ebay for 150, and have seen one or two sets of aftermarkets on here around the same, that is all i can afford to spend right now. so is it worth holding out to find a set of aftermarkets on here or just go with OEM rebuilds?
You can also pull the fuel rail and put the key in the run position to energize the fuel pump and pressurize the rail. If the injector(s) start to drip, then you know you have one that is faulty. I would just go with a set of OEM replacements if you do indeed have a bad injector.
