Oil Cooler on '94 Z-28

I'm building a '94 lt-1 -It has an oil cooler between the oil filter and the filter housing. Only a few engine diagrams (incl. the one in my service manual) show this, and parts places don't even list it. I'm ok with doing away with it, just wondering (1) why do I need it in the first place? and(2) Did GM do away with this because of problems like oiling down the cooling system
